The only Italian stage of the World Match Racing Tour on Lake Ledro
The O.M. International Ledro Match Race is one of the most prestigious regattas on the Italian sailing scene: it is the only "one-on-one" match race event held in Italy that counts towards the World Match Racing Tour, the international circuit that gathers the world's best skippers in this specialty. The event takes place every June on the waters of Lake Ledro, in the municipality of Ledro, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), at an altitude of over 650 meters nestled in the mountains of the Ledro Valley.
Unlike fleet racing, where dozens of boats compete together, a match race pits only two identical boats against each other in a direct duel: the first to cross the finish line wins. It follows the same format as the America's Cup, characterized by aggressive starts, close-quarters tactics, and constant twists. In Ledro, the challenges are raced aboard J/22 monotypes, owned by the Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro, ensuring that all crews compete with strictly equal equipment, leaving only skill and strategy to make the difference.
The competition, classified as Grade 2 by World Sailing, begins with a round-robin phase where every skipper faces all others, followed by knockout rounds (quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final) to determine the winner. Twelve skippers from various nations participate in the duels, many of whom are consistently ranked among the top twenty in the world category.
The regatta is organized by the Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro (AVLL), a historic Trentino sailing club based on the shores of the lake. Over the years, the event has become a permanent fixture on the international calendar and a source of pride for the entire Ledro Valley, which welcomes athletes and enthusiasts to a charming alpine setting, just a few kilometers from Lake Garda. The program includes an opening ceremony, three days of racing open to the public from the shores and the clubhouse, and the final prize-giving ceremony.
The 15th edition of the O.M. International Ledro Match Race took place from June 19 to 21, 2026, on Lake Ledro, preceded by the opening ceremony on Thursday, June 18. Twelve skippers from eight nations competed aboard the J/22 boats of the Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro in this Grade 2 stage of the World Match Racing Tour, the only one in Italy.
After the round-robin phase and the knockout rounds, the final saw the triumph of Swiss sailor Eric Monnin, who defeated Frenchman Ange Delerce with a clear 2-0 score. The third step of the podium went to the Italian Riccardo Sepe (3V Sailing Club), who had an excellent tournament. Monnin thus added his name to the roll of honor, succeeding Rocco Attili, the winner of the two previous editions.
The twelve participating skippers (with nation): Christian Hamilton (GBR), Timothée Rossi (FRA), Tom Foucher (FRA), Eric Monnin (SUI), Ange Delerce (FRA), Lennard Bal (NED), Mati Sepp (EST), Angelos Papagerogiou (GRE), Michal Gryglewski (POL), Kristine Mauritzen (DEN), Julia D'Amodio (FRA), and Riccardo Sepe (ITA).
Principal Race Officer: Fabio Barrasso — Chief Umpire: Martin Clasen.
Lake Ledro can be reached by car from the western shore of Lake Garda (Riva del Garda) by driving up the SS240 towards the Ledro Valley. By train, the nearest station is Rovereto, which is connected by bus to Riva del Garda and the Ledro Valley.
The challenges can be viewed for free from the lake shores and the areas of the Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro, located on Via Alzer. The AVLL clubhouse hosts the opening ceremony and the prize-giving.
