About Nucillium

Nucillium is the medieval historical re-enactment evening that every summer transports Nociglia, a small village in the lower Salento region of the province of Lecce, back to the heart of its 13th and 14th-century past. A historical pageant featuring archers, dancers, and musicians winds around the Baronial Palace and the ancient Norman tower, while the town center comes alive with ancient crafts, medieval games, juggling, and tastings of period-inspired dishes. A dive into history designed for all ages, with strong involvement from the local youth.

A night in the Salento Middle Ages

Nucillium is the medieval historical re-enactment evening that every summer transforms the historic center of Nociglia, a small town in the province of Lecce in the heart of lower Salento, into a village suspended between the 13th and 14th centuries. The name itself recalls the ancient designation of the village and serves as the common thread for a night where alleys, squares, and monuments return to tell the story of the importance Nociglia held in the medieval era.

The Baronial Palace and the Norman tower

The heart of the event is the Baronial Palace, around which most of the staging is developed. Providing a symbolic backdrop are the ancient Norman tower and the Byzantine church, concrete testimonies to the strategic role the village played in medieval Salento. The re-enactment was born precisely with the aim of enhancing this historical-artistic heritage and raising awareness among citizens and tourists about its preservation.

Pageant, archers, and ancient crafts

The evening opens with a historical pageant that travels through the streets of the center with costumed figures, dancers, musicians, and archers. Along the route, you will find educational stalls dedicated to ancient crafts, artisan workshops, and medieval games handmade in carpentry workshops. There is no shortage of archery displays, historical dances, juggling, and performances that fill the entire village area.

The protagonism of the youth

A distinctive feature of Nucillium is the strong involvement of the younger generation: children and teenagers from summer workshops curate a theatrical performance set in the medieval era, turning the re-enactment into an educational project shared by the entire community. Over the years, the event has also involved local students and associations, making it a true collective effort for the village.

Flavors and guided tours

Alongside the performances, the public can participate in guided tours of the village monuments, such as the church of Madonna dell'Itri, and conclude the evening with a tasting of medieval specialties, recreated to bring the flavors of the era back to life. The initiative is organized by the Nociglia Municipal Administration with the support of the Puglia Regional Council.

Hosted in one of the most authentic villages in the province of Lecce, Nucillium is today an eagerly awaited event of the Salento summer, capable of combining historical memory, entertainment, and conviviality in a single night dedicated to the Middle Ages.

Nucillium — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Nucillium in Nociglia is expected, as per tradition, in the month of August. At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Municipal Administration: the evening should once again offer the usual journey into the Salento Middle Ages with a historical pageant, archers, ancient crafts, and tastings.

The Nucillium medieval historical re-enactment is a recurring summer event in Nociglia (LE), organized by the Municipal Administration. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. Based on previous editions, the event is usually held in the first half of August, in the evening, with its epicenter at the Baronial Palace and in the historic center of the village. The detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
