The evening road race in the heart of medieval Penne
The Notturna Pennese is one of the most beloved evening road races in the Abruzzo hinterland. Every year, at the end of June, the historic center of Penne, in the heart of the Pescara province in Abruzzo, transforms into an open-air theater for hundreds of athletes and enthusiasts. Organized by the ASD Amatori Podisti Pennesi, the event is a staple of the regional running calendar and the Corrilabruzzo circuit.
The competitive race takes place on a city circuit of approximately 2.9 km, repeated three times for a total of 9 km. The route winds through the alleys, squares, and slopes of Penne's medieval center, the ancient capital of the Vestini and one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy." Known as the "City of Brick" for its characteristic red brick architecture, Penne offers a unique backdrop: running at night through its illuminated streets creates an atmosphere that transcends simple sports competition.
The Notturna Pennese is not just for expert athletes. The program includes several categories:
One of the most distinctive aspects of the event is its deep connection to the local area and its culinary excellence. Category winners are awarded the prized Pecorino di Farindola, a cheese typical of the Vestina area. The final refreshment station offers water, tea, and Rimpizzo, a traditional Abruzzese pastry rooted in local agricultural heritage. The organizers' commitment to hospitality is also evident in the race packs for early registrants and special benefits for athletes traveling from outside the region.
With over forty years of history, the Notturna Pennese is much more than a race: it is a moment of gathering for the entire Municipality of Penne and for visitors choosing inland Abruzzo as their summer destination. The evening blends the spirit of sport with the celebration of the village's historical and cultural heritage, a combination that makes this night race one of the most evocative in the region.
The forty-first edition of the Notturna Pennese was held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, with the meeting point at 6:00 PM in Piazza San Francesco. The evening kicked off at 7:00 PM with the youth races of the 27th "Città di Penne" Trophy, valid for the FIDAL Regional Championship, with varying distances: 1.5 km for younger children, 2 km for cadets, and 3 km for older cadets.
At 9:00 PM, the 9 km competitive race started, held on a historic circuit of approximately 2.9 km, repeated three times through the alleys and squares of the medieval center. At 9:10 PM, the 3 km non-competitive fun run took place, open to everyone.
Cash prizes were awarded to the top three men and women overall, with trophies and local products for category winners, including Pecorino di Farindola. The race pack included a beach towel for the first 400 registrants, and the final refreshment station offered water, tea, a pizza voucher, and the traditional Abruzzese "Rimpizzo" pastry. Free registration was confirmed for athletes traveling from outside the region.
Penne is located in the hinterland of the province of Pescara. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Pescara Nord-Città Sant'Angelo exit) or the A25, continuing along provincial roads towards the interior. The nearest train station is Pescara, which is connected to Penne by regional bus lines.
The meeting point is in Piazza San Francesco. The youth races begin in the early evening, followed by the 9 km competitive race and the 3 km non-competitive fun run. Traffic restrictions in the historic center are expected during the event.
Registration for the competitive race is reserved for registered athletes; the non-competitive fun run is open to all. Special benefits are available for athletes coming from outside the region. For details on costs and procedures, please refer to the ASD Amatori Podisti Pennesi.
