New Year's Eve illuminated by torches on the snowy slopes of Monte Alpet
The New Year's Eve Torchlight Procession is one of the most anticipated winter events in San Giacomo di Roburent, the ski village within the municipality of Roburent, in the Province of Cuneo, in the heart of Piedmont. On the evening of December 31st, as the rest of Italy prepares for the midnight toast, the small mountain community gathers around Monte Alpet to bring to life a spectacle that combines the magic of snow, the glow of torches, and the warmth of a village festival.
The highlight is the descent of ski instructors and local skiers carrying lit torches: starting from the summit of Monte Alpet, the lights trace a long, luminous trail down the snowy slope, creating a sight that thrills both young and old every year. For non-skiers, there is a walking torchlight procession that starts from the Via Sapel shrine and reaches the Giardina area, where the community gathers for the traditional symbolic ritual of "burning the old year," a gesture of good luck that brings the past twelve months to a cheerful close.
The atmosphere is typical of mountain festivities: at the end of the procession, hot mulled wine is offered by the Action Ski School, and the evening continues with music, toasts, and conviviality. At midnight, the countdown turns into a grand collective moment, with well-wishes, panettone, and the classic warmth of Alpine communities that know how to celebrate together. Over the years, the event has seen excellent turnout, enlivening not only San Giacomo but also the nearby village of Cardini, home to the ski lifts.
The New Year's Eve Torchlight Procession is more than just a New Year's event; it is a symbol of the skiing identity of San Giacomo di Roburent, one of the most characteristic resorts in the Sangiacomo-Cardini area on Monte Alpet. The initiative is made possible through the collaboration between the Roburent municipal administration, the Essere Sangiacomo ETS association, the Action Ski School, Bar Stefano, and the Cardini ski lifts, a testament to a community that passionately preserves its winter traditions.
