The re-enactment of transhumance in the Ligurian Alps, with costumed figures and a light-hearted race
In the heart of the Ligurian Alps, at over 750 meters above sea level in the upper Arroscia Valley, the Municipality of Mendatica (Province of Imperia) preserves one of the most fascinating traditions of the western Ligurian hinterland. The Historical Procession of the Malghe evokes scenes and atmospheres of the ancient transhumant pastoral civilization, that of the Brigasco people who for centuries animated the pastures around Monte Saccarello.
The event begins in the morning with a market of producers and artisans in Piazza della Chiesa, accompanied by the opening of local museums and digital experiences dedicated to the area. At noon, the Pro Loco offers a tasting of Cucina Bianca, the typical gastronomic tradition of the territories around Saccarello, made with dairy products, cereals, and mountain herbs.
In the afternoon, the historical procession parades through the village, with costumed participants staging the descent of flocks and herds. They are accompanied by the flag-throwers of Ventimiglia. The grand finale is the Goat Palio, a competition with a symbolic and light-hearted character that festively recalls the role of pastoralism in the community's life.
Promoted by the Municipality of Mendatica and the Pro Loco with the patronage of the Liguria Region and the Regional Natural Park of the Ligurian Alps, the festival is recognized among the Authentic Ligurian Events. For visitors to the Imperia hinterland, it is the ideal opportunity to discover a mountain village that has made its pastoral identity a source of pride and hospitality.
For 2026, the appointment with the Historical Procession of the Malghe is set for Sunday, September 20, as indicated in the regional calendar of Authentic Ligurian Events. The structure of the day follows the proven re-enactment scheme: producers' market in the morning, tasting of Cucina Bianca at lunch, historical procession, and Goat Palio in the afternoon with the flag-throwers of Ventimiglia.
The detailed hourly program will be released by the Municipality of Mendatica and the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event.
