Illuminations, patron saint festivities, and a month of events spread across the town and its hamlets

Every year, from early December until the Epiphany, the municipality of San Nicola Manfredi—a town of just over 3,300 residents located about 8 kilometers from Benevento in Campania—transforms its territory into one large illuminated trail. The Natale Sannicolese is not a festival concentrated in a single square; it is a distributed calendar of events that reaches the municipal center and all its hamlets, from Pagliara to Santa Maria Ingrisone, Iannassi, Toccanisi, Santa Maria a Toro, and Monterocchetta, featuring lights, religious celebrations, concerts, social initiatives, and moments dedicated to children.
The devotional heart of the event falls on December 6th, the day the Church celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari, the patron saint of the town that bears his name. Celebrations traditionally take place in two locations: in the morning at the Sanctuary of Saint Nicholas in the main town, and in the afternoon in the hamlet of Pagliara, home to the church of San Nicola Vescovo. A few days later, the community gathers for the feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Diocese of Benevento publishes the liturgical program for both feasts annually, serving as the religious anchor around which the entire civil calendar is built.
The lights are the most recognizable identity of the festival. The municipal administration plans them months in advance: for the 2025 edition, the council led by Mayor Arturo Vernillo allocated 6,000 euros as early as October, with the stated goal of illuminating not only the town center but also the hamlets and sites of historical and religious interest. The lighting ceremony, set for December 6th, coincides with the patron saint's day, a choice that explicitly links the civil and devotional dimensions.
The most original feature of the Natale Sannicolese is its desire to combine events with services for the citizenry. Recent editions have included:
The geography of San Nicola Manfredi explains the chosen formula well. The municipal territory, at an altitude of 410 meters in the Sabato Valley, is fragmented into numerous inhabited nuclei: Pagliara, which is actually an administrative exclave overlooking the ancient papal territory of Benevento; Santa Maria Ingrisone with its Piazza Rossi; Iannassi and Bosco Perrotta; Toccanisi; Santa Maria a Toro; and Monterocchetta. Rotating events through each of these locations keeps social life vibrant in the smaller villages.
The festival was born in 2021 and has consolidated rapidly. The fourth edition, in December 2024, opened on Sunday, December 8th, with a double concert by Valerio Scanu: at 5:30 PM at the Sanctuary and at 7:00 PM in the church of San Nicola Vescovo in Pagliara. The calendar continued until January 6th with a trip to Puglia, a marching band, inflatables for children, Francesca Maresca's Christmas concert, and the Christmas Eve bonfire. The fifth edition, between December 2025 and January 2026, confirmed the formula while shifting the focus toward inclusion and health prevention.
Those looking for a postcard-perfect, large-scale Christmas market won't find it here, and that is precisely its appeal: it is an authentic village Christmas, made of illuminated sanctuaries, songs in churches, and small squares that fill up for an afternoon. For those visiting the Sannio region in December, combining a day in Benevento—only eight kilometers away—with an evening among the lights of San Nicola Manfredi is the best way to understand how Christmas is truly experienced in the hinterland of Campania.
At the moment, no official communication from the Municipality of San Nicola Manfredi confirms the dates of the Natale Sannicolese for December 2026. The information provided in this file is based on previous editions, in particular the fifth edition held between December 2025 and January 2026.
The festival calendar traditionally follows a stable structure: a council resolution with the allocation for lights in the autumn, the lighting ceremony and feast of the patron Saint Nicholas on December 6th between the main town and the hamlet of Pagliara, celebrations of the Immaculate Conception, musical events in the sanctuaries, and closing with the Epiphany in Santa Maria Ingrisone. However, none of this is confirmed for 2026 until the Municipality publishes the program.
Those wishing to organize a visit to the province of Benevento in December can monitor the Municipality's official website, the administration's social media channels, and local Sannio newspapers, which usually publish the complete program in November.
San Nicola Manfredi is located about 8 km from Benevento, in the hinterland of Campania. By car: from the SS 7 Appia or the Benevento-Castel del Lago highway junction, continue toward the Sabato Valley; events are distributed between the main town and the hamlets, so a car is the most practical way to get around. By train: Benevento station (lines to Naples, Caserta, and Foggia), then local buses or taxis. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport, about 70 km away.
The Natale Sannicolese events are promoted by the Municipality and in previous editions have been free and open to the public, including the health screening days. Some initiatives, such as cultural excursions, require prior registration at municipal offices.
The municipality's accommodation options are limited: the most convenient solution is to stay in Benevento, which has hotels, B&Bs, and farm stays and is only a few minutes away by car. There are also numerous farm stays in the Sabato and Taburno valleys.
