About Natale Sannicolese

Every December, the municipality of San Nicola Manfredi in the Sannio region of Benevento lights up with festive displays for the Natale Sannicolese. This widespread festival combines the December 6th feast of the patron saint, Saint Nicholas, with celebrations for the Immaculate Conception and a packed calendar of events reaching the main town and all its hamlets, from Pagliara to Santa Maria Ingrisone. The program features concerts in sanctuaries, cultural excursions, free health screenings, visits from Santa Claus for children, and the Befana in the square to mark the Epiphany.

Natale Sannicolese: A widespread festival in the Sannio region

Every year, from early December until the Epiphany, the municipality of San Nicola Manfredi—a town of just over 3,300 residents located about 8 kilometers from Benevento in Campania—transforms its territory into one large illuminated trail. The Natale Sannicolese is not a festival concentrated in a single square; it is a distributed calendar of events that reaches the municipal center and all its hamlets, from Pagliara to Santa Maria Ingrisone, Iannassi, Toccanisi, Santa Maria a Toro, and Monterocchetta, featuring lights, religious celebrations, concerts, social initiatives, and moments dedicated to children.

The Patron Saint Nicholas and the Immaculate Conception

The devotional heart of the event falls on December 6th, the day the Church celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari, the patron saint of the town that bears his name. Celebrations traditionally take place in two locations: in the morning at the Sanctuary of Saint Nicholas in the main town, and in the afternoon in the hamlet of Pagliara, home to the church of San Nicola Vescovo. A few days later, the community gathers for the feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Diocese of Benevento publishes the liturgical program for both feasts annually, serving as the religious anchor around which the entire civil calendar is built.

The illuminations: A visible sign of the festival

The lights are the most recognizable identity of the festival. The municipal administration plans them months in advance: for the 2025 edition, the council led by Mayor Arturo Vernillo allocated 6,000 euros as early as October, with the stated goal of illuminating not only the town center but also the hamlets and sites of historical and religious interest. The lighting ceremony, set for December 6th, coincides with the patron saint's day, a choice that explicitly links the civil and devotional dimensions.

A program that goes beyond entertainment

The most original feature of the Natale Sannicolese is its desire to combine events with services for the citizenry. Recent editions have included:

  • Christmas concerts in the sanctuaries of the main town and Pagliara, featuring the voice of Francesca Maresca, and gospel music events at the Sanctuary of Saint Nicholas;
  • Excursions and travel days open to citizens to discover other locations in Central-Southern Italy: in December 2025, the destination was the Tyrrhenian coast, visiting Sperlonga and Gaeta;
  • Health prevention days, with free cancer screenings set up in Piazza Roma;
  • The arrival of Santa Claus in the hamlets, with entertainment for families and children;
  • The delivery of a gift to babies born during the year by the mayor;
  • The Befana in the square for the Epiphany, which closes the program at the beginning of the new year.

The hamlets: Taking turns in the spotlight

The geography of San Nicola Manfredi explains the chosen formula well. The municipal territory, at an altitude of 410 meters in the Sabato Valley, is fragmented into numerous inhabited nuclei: Pagliara, which is actually an administrative exclave overlooking the ancient papal territory of Benevento; Santa Maria Ingrisone with its Piazza Rossi; Iannassi and Bosco Perrotta; Toccanisi; Santa Maria a Toro; and Monterocchetta. Rotating events through each of these locations keeps social life vibrant in the smaller villages.

Previous editions

The festival was born in 2021 and has consolidated rapidly. The fourth edition, in December 2024, opened on Sunday, December 8th, with a double concert by Valerio Scanu: at 5:30 PM at the Sanctuary and at 7:00 PM in the church of San Nicola Vescovo in Pagliara. The calendar continued until January 6th with a trip to Puglia, a marching band, inflatables for children, Francesca Maresca's Christmas concert, and the Christmas Eve bonfire. The fifth edition, between December 2025 and January 2026, confirmed the formula while shifting the focus toward inclusion and health prevention.

Why it's worth visiting

Those looking for a postcard-perfect, large-scale Christmas market won't find it here, and that is precisely its appeal: it is an authentic village Christmas, made of illuminated sanctuaries, songs in churches, and small squares that fill up for an afternoon. For those visiting the Sannio region in December, combining a day in Benevento—only eight kilometers away—with an evening among the lights of San Nicola Manfredi is the best way to understand how Christmas is truly experienced in the hinterland of Campania.

Natale Sannicolese — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Natale Sannicolese has not yet been officially announced. The Municipality of San Nicola Manfredi typically authorizes the organization of the festival between October and November, with the lighting ceremony on December 6th coinciding with the feast of the patron saint, Saint Nicholas. Until municipal acts and the diocesan manifesto are published, no certain dates or detailed programs are available: we recommend checking the Municipality's channels and the local Sannio press.

At the moment, no official communication from the Municipality of San Nicola Manfredi confirms the dates of the Natale Sannicolese for December 2026. The information provided in this file is based on previous editions, in particular the fifth edition held between December 2025 and January 2026.

The festival calendar traditionally follows a stable structure: a council resolution with the allocation for lights in the autumn, the lighting ceremony and feast of the patron Saint Nicholas on December 6th between the main town and the hamlet of Pagliara, celebrations of the Immaculate Conception, musical events in the sanctuaries, and closing with the Epiphany in Santa Maria Ingrisone. However, none of this is confirmed for 2026 until the Municipality publishes the program.

Those wishing to organize a visit to the province of Benevento in December can monitor the Municipality's official website, the administration's social media channels, and local Sannio newspapers, which usually publish the complete program in November.

Practical information — Natale Sannicolese

How to get there

San Nicola Manfredi is located about 8 km from Benevento, in the hinterland of Campania. By car: from the SS 7 Appia or the Benevento-Castel del Lago highway junction, continue toward the Sabato Valley; events are distributed between the main town and the hamlets, so a car is the most practical way to get around. By train: Benevento station (lines to Naples, Caserta, and Foggia), then local buses or taxis. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport, about 70 km away.

Admission and costs

The Natale Sannicolese events are promoted by the Municipality and in previous editions have been free and open to the public, including the health screening days. Some initiatives, such as cultural excursions, require prior registration at municipal offices.

Where to stay

The municipality's accommodation options are limited: the most convenient solution is to stay in Benevento, which has hotels, B&Bs, and farm stays and is only a few minutes away by car. There are also numerous farm stays in the Sabato and Taburno valleys.

Tips

  • December 6th, the patron saint's day, is the date not to be missed: celebrations in the morning in the main town and in the afternoon in Pagliara, with the lighting ceremony.
  • December evenings in the hills are cold: warm clothing is essential.
  • The complete program is published by the Municipality and the local Sannio press only between late October and November: it is advisable to check dates shortly before departure.
  • The liturgical program for the patron saint and Immaculate Conception feasts is distributed by the Diocese of Benevento.
