About NAIF Balfolk

The NAIF Balfolk Festival is the premier event in Campania dedicated to balfolk, the traditional European social dance. Organized by the Neapolis Balfolk association, the festival takes over the FOQUS Foundation in the heart of Naples' Spanish Quarter for three days, featuring dance concerts with Italian and international bands, dance workshops for all levels, late-night jam sessions, and celebrations that spill out into the streets until late.

Balfolk in the heart of the Spanish Quarter

The NAIF Balfolk Festival is an annual autumn event that brings the balfolk movement to Naples. Balfolk is a form of traditional European social dance that has seen a massive revival in recent decades, drawing on folk music from France, Belgium, Italy, and Northern Europe. Organized by the Neapolis Balfolk association, active in the city since 2018, the festival is hosted at the FOQUS Foundation - Quartieri Spagnoli Foundation on Via Portacarrese a Montecalvario, a landmark site for cultural regeneration in the city of Naples.

What is balfolk?

Balfolk isn't a performance to watch from a seat; it's a dance party where musicians play live and the audience dances. The repertoire spans Europe—bourrée, mazurka, scottish, waltz, circassian circle, Breton dances—and blends with the traditional dances of Southern Italy, from tammurriata to tarantella. You don't need a fixed partner or technical training: morning and afternoon workshops are designed to introduce the steps to newcomers, while experienced dancers can hone their skills with world-class instructors.

Concerts, workshops, and jam sessions

The festival follows the format of major European events, packed into a long weekend:

  • Dance concerts from late afternoon until midnight, with Italian and international bands alternating on the main stage;
  • Dance workshops held over the three days, covering both European repertoires and Southern Italian dances;
  • Late-night jam sessions, where musicians and dancers mingle until 1:30 AM;
  • Street celebrations, as the party moves from the foundation's spaces into the vibrant, narrow alleyways of the neighborhood.

A welcome desk and merchandise stand are available on-site during designated hours each day.

A traveling festival finds its home in Naples

The first edition took place from November 3 to 5, 2023, at the Principe di Napoli Campus in Agerola, overlooking the Lattari Mountains; the second, from October 11 to 13, 2024, at Villa Maravì in Sorrento. Since 2025, the festival has settled in Naples at FOQUS, adopting a more urban dimension and engaging directly with the neighborhood rather than isolating itself in a resort.

Naples, Campania, and folk dance

The choice of the province of Naples and Campania is no coincidence. The region preserves a living choreographic heritage—tammurriate from the Vesuvius and Phlegraean areas, Cilento tarantella, and festivals linked to Marian shrines—which the festival connects with transalpine repertoires. This is one of the most fascinating aspects of the event: demonstrating that European folk dance and Southern Italian traditions share the same social function, bringing people together through music and movement.

Who is it for?

The audience consists of regular dancers from all over Italy and abroad, as well as curious locals discovering the genre for the first time. The atmosphere is informal and participatory, a far cry from a traditional concert: those who don't dance can still enjoy the music, follow the jam sessions, or simply experience the weekend as an opportunity to explore a changing part of the city.

NAIF Balfolk — edition 2026

The fourth edition of the NAIF Balfolk Festival takes place from Friday, October 9 to Sunday, October 11, 2026, at the FOQUS Foundation in Naples. Three days of dance concerts featuring Ciac Boum, Mbraia, Parasol, Thalas, Le Bal des Bestioles, Pitularita, Julien Bohème, Guus Herremans, and Le Voci della Tradizione, plus dance workshops with Anna Paganini, Gerard Godon, Christian Pacher, and Mariagrazia Altieri, and late-night jam sessions.

The fourth edition

The NAIF Balfolk Festival returns to the Spanish Quarter of Naples from October 9 to 11, 2026, at the FOQUS Foundation. Doors open on Friday at 4:30 PM, participant check-in starts at 5:00 PM, and the festival concludes on Sunday evening around 7:45 PM.

The 2026 lineup is the most international to date: alongside the French band Ciac Boum, a historic group from Poitou, and Mbraia, bringing dance music from Gascony, the festival will feature Parasol, Thalas, Le Bal des Bestioles, Pitularita, Julien Bohème, and Guus Herremans. The space dedicated to the Southern Italian repertoire is entrusted to Le Voci della Tradizione, performing on Sunday afternoon.

Workshops are spread over the three days and led by Anna Paganini, Gerard Godon, Christian Pacher, and, for Southern Italian dances, Mariagrazia Altieri. Friday begins with a short workshop on connection between dancers, led by Mariarosaria Bergamene, designed for those arriving without experience. On the first two evenings, after the final concert, the jam session keeps the party going until 1:30 AM and continues in the square. The organizers remind attendees that the program and schedule are subject to updates until the festival days.
