Contemporary dance, performance, and video art at the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte
Born in 2006 in Sant'Agata dei Goti and having evolved through some of Naples' most vibrant cultural institutionsโfrom the MADRE museum and the Goethe-Institut to the Teatro Area NordโMovimentale is now one of the longest-running contemporary dance and video art festivals in the Campania region. Conceived and directed by the Interno 5 cultural association and co-funded by the Municipality of Naples, the festival has made the relationship between the body, space, and visual arts its signature. Each edition reactivates a corner of the city through movement, transforming courtyards, halls, and gardens into stages.
For its 20th anniversary in 2026, Movimentale has chosen an exceptional partner: the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, located in the San Carlo all'Arena district, one of Italy's most significant museum complexes. The artistic direction is led by Antonello Tudisco, with organizational management by Hilenia De Falco and Vincenzo Ambrosino.
The heart of this edition is a simple yet powerful concept: six choreographers are invited to interpret a selection of twelve masterpieces from the Capodimonte collections, translating them into site-specific creations designed for the museum's own environments. It is not about illustrating a painting, but letting the art suggest gestures, timing, and posture. Works featured in this dialogue include:
The participating choreographers include Marianna Moccia (FUNA), Francesco Marilungo (KรRPER), Emma Cianchi (ArtGarage), Swedish artist Linus Jansner, the Italian-British duo IgorxMoreno (Igor Urzelai and Moreno Solinas), and Antonello Tudisco himself with Interno 5.
The calendar spans six months. In July, performances are integrated into the museum's special evening openings: four nights where visitors can explore Capodimonte late into the evening and witness creations in the Palazzina dei Principi and the Belvedere courtyard. In autumn, the festival moves indoors to the monumental Salone delle Feste for two new appointments in November and December.
Alongside the live program, Movimentale has always dedicated a section to video art. The international video dance competition, open to choreographers and filmmakers worldwide, screens selected works in the museum's entrance courtyardโan outdoor screen that welcomes the public before and after performances. This is the festival's most experimental facet, which has established Movimentale as a reference point for those exploring the relationship between the body and moving images.
The Movimentale_Lab section complements the performances with a training and research program on the body, consisting of four workshops between late June and July, with public showcases open to all. Themes revolve around the relationship between the body, architecture, landscape, and nature, including an inclusive dance path for people with and without disabilitiesโa choice consistent with the festival's civic vocation, which values artistic accessibility as much as quality.
Movimentale is part of the broader cultural strategy of the Municipality of Naples, which supports the festival as a project for urban regeneration through art. For the Campania region, this means having a stable event in the capital that combines auteur dance, visual arts, and historical heritage, offering the public a new way to experience a museum: no longer just through the eyes, but through the body, the anticipation, and the surprise of finding a living figure before a 17th-century painting.
In 2026, Movimentale turns twenty and celebrates with the most ambitious edition in its history, hosted by the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte and spread over six months, from June 30 to December 13. The festival, conceived and directed by the Interno 5 association and supported by the Municipality of Naples, is under the artistic direction of Antonello Tudisco, with organizational management by Hilenia De Falco and Vincenzo Ambrosino.
The structure of the edition is clear: twelve masterpieces from the museum's collections, six choreographers, and as many creations designed for the spaces that host them. The Palazzina dei Principi, the Belvedere courtyard, and the Salone delle Feste become, in turn, a stage, a screening room, and a meeting place for the public.
The first two stages coincide with the museum's special evening openings, Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th of July, and then Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th of July, from 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM. On both occasions, visits to the collections are intertwined with two performances, at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, and the outdoor screening of works selected for the video dance competition.
The festival continues on November 14 and 15 with the creation by the IgorxMoreno duo inspired by Annibale Carracci's Hercules at the Crossroads, and concludes on December 12 and 13 with Hybris by Antonello Tudisco and Interno 5, dedicated to Filippo Tagliolini's The Fall of the Giants. Both appointments take place in the Salone delle Feste, with double performances at 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
