A Sunday in May in the Sabine village at the foot of Castello Orsini
Every year, on a Sunday in May, the village of Nerola—home to just under two thousand inhabitants in the Metropolitan City of Rome, at the northern edge of Lazio where the Roman Sabina fades toward the province of Rieti—fills with visitors for the Mutton Sauce Gnocchi Festival. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Nerola APS, is part of the "A Sunday in May" program and transforms the squares of the historic center into a large open-air dining room.
Gnocchi with mutton sauce is a signature dish of the inland Lazio region, a staple of popular festivals in the Sabina and Apennine areas. The sauce is prepared with mutton slow-cooked for a long time, releasing an intense and unmistakable flavor; the hand-rolled gnocchi catch the sauce perfectly. Alongside the main dish, you will find bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil from the hills of Nerola, mutton served as a separate course, grilled sausage, and to finish, traditional desserts and the ever-present Nutella crêpes.
The menu is designed to satisfy everyone: the full meal option is accompanied by a non-mutton version and a vegetarian proposal, with the possibility of ordering individual dishes and extra portions at the register.
From the morning, the historic center hosts a craft and local produce market. Among the stalls, you will find hobbyists selling jewelry and crochet items, as well as small local farms offering honey, cheese, sweets, and above all, the Sabina PDO extra virgin olive oil, one of Italy's oldest culinary treasures, produced on these hills covered in centuries-old olive groves.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Nerola. The town, perched at an altitude of 453 meters along the ancient Via Salaria, is dominated by Castello Orsini, a medieval fortress built by the Orsini family, who acquired the fiefdom at the end of the 12th century. The manor, now restored, is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Sabina region. During the day, you can stroll through the alleys of the historic center and climb to the panoramic terrace, from which the view embraces the Tiber valley, the Lucretili mountains, and the endless expanse of olive groves.
Less than an hour from Rome, the Nerola Gnocchi Festival is a genuine example of a village feast: affordable prices, food prepared by Pro Loco volunteers, free entry, and an atmosphere that remains that of a community coming together. It lacks the choreography of large events, but possesses the substance of a culinary tradition that is passed down and draws thousands of people from the province of Rome, the Rieti Sabina, and the capital every May.
In 2026, the Mutton Sauce Gnocchi Festival in Nerola was initially announced for Sunday, May 10, but unfavorable weather forecasts led the Pro Loco Nerola APS to move it to the following Sunday, May 17, 2026, in accordance with the event's postponement policy.
The day began at 11 AM with the opening of the market in the historic center and the opportunity to visit the village, Castello Orsini, and the panoramic terrace overlooking the Sabine valley. At noon, the food stalls opened in the square, with service continuing into the afternoon until about 6 PM.
The three-menu formula, free entry, and free parking and shuttle service were confirmed for 2026, along with the ability to pay by card.
By car from Rome: Take the Via Salaria (SS4) towards Rieti and exit for Nerola; alternatively, take the A1 motorway, exit at Fiano Romano, and follow the Salaria. The journey takes about an hour from the Grande Raccordo Anulare. By train: the nearest station is Fara Sabina-Montelibretti (FL1 line), from where you can continue by car or local services.
During the festival, free parking is available in areas on the outskirts of the town, along with a free shuttle service to the historic center, which is restricted to traffic.
Entry to the event and the market is free; you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls. Card and debit card payments are accepted.
It is best to arrive in the morning to visit the village and the market before the stalls open at noon. Wear comfortable shoes: the streets of the historic center are uphill and cobbled. In case of bad weather, the festival is postponed to the following Sunday.
