Organ concerts beneath the world's largest elliptical dome
In the heart of the Monregalese area, just a few kilometers from Mondovì, the Santuario Basilica Regina Montis Regalis in Vicoforte (Province of Cuneo, Piedmont) opens its doors to music during the summer. The Musical Sundays are a cycle of short organ concerts designed to accompany prayer and contemplation in one of Italy's most spectacular places of worship.
The Sanctuary of Vicoforte is world-renowned for its elliptical dome—the largest of its kind in the world, with a major axis of over 37 meters—and for the immense frescoed surface that covers it. Resonating beneath these vaults is the Vegezzi Bossi organ, a pneumatic-action instrument installed at the beginning of the 20th century, which gives voice to this summer festival.
The festival is promoted by the Nativitas Association with the aim of raising awareness of the Basilica's organ heritage and offering pilgrims, tourists, and enthusiasts a moment of beauty. These are not solemn concert performances, but intimate, free events that fit into the natural rhythm of the day at the Sanctuary, immediately following the evening mass.
Alongside established organists, young students from the Ghedini Conservatory of Cuneo also take to the console, performing pieces from the classical and sacred repertoire. The grand finale, with an international flair, is entrusted to the Amici della Musica di Savigliano as part of the Organi Vespera series, featuring a prestigious guest and literary readings to accompany the music.
The Musical Sundays are the ideal opportunity to discover Vicoforte by combining art, faith, and culture: a visit to the monumental complex, the sound of the historic organ, and the evocative atmosphere of a unique setting make every summer Sunday an unmissable experience in the Monregalese area.
