The festival of concerts and cultural trekking at high altitude in the Apuan Alps
Founded in 2013 and organized by the Italian Alpine Club - Massa Section "Elso Biagi", Musica sulle Apuane is one of Tuscany's most original festivals: a widespread program of concerts and theatrical performances hosted in the most evocative spots of the Apuan Alps, the marble mountains that overlook Versilia and the Apuan coast. The idea is simple and powerful: to reach the stage, you have to walk, as the event venues are mountain huts, clearings, forest auditoriums, and mountain trails. Music thus becomes a pretext to rediscover the territory on foot, at a slow pace.
The Municipality of Massa, in the province of Massa-Carrara, is the hub of the event. The main appointments are held at Pian della Fioba, home to the Auditorium nel Bosco, and in mountain hamlets such as Forno. From here, the festival radiates into a wider area covering the municipalities of Carrara, Fivizzano, Montignoso (province of Massa-Carrara), and various centers in Versilia and Lunigiana, in an authentically itinerant design between Tuscany and the Apennines.
The program is multidisciplinary: classical and contemporary music, jazz, blues, world music, musical theater, and family shows. Under the artistic direction of Gioia Giusti, every year the festival hosts nationally renowned performers and emerging young musicians, often in places accessible only on foot. The offering also includes theatrical trekking and guided walks, blending hiking with live performance.
Realized with the support of the Apuan Alps Regional Park and the Italian Alpine Club, the festival has a strong environmental and cultural vocation: many appointments are dedicated to the historical memory of the Resistance in the Apuan Alps, the identity of the territory, and the protection of the mountains. It is an opportunity to experience the lesser-known side of Tuscany, that of marble peaks and mountain villages, accompanied by music.
The 14th edition of Musica sulle Apuane (2026) opens on April 25, Liberation Day, and continues until September 8, 2026. Under the artistic direction of Gioia Giusti and organized by the CAI Massa Section, the festival spreads concerts, theater, and hikes throughout the Apuan area, from the Municipality of Massa to Versilia and Lunigiana. New this year are theatrical trekking and the establishment of scholarships for young musicians. All events are free.
Massa is served by the A12 motorway (Massa exit) and by the Massa Centro railway station on the Genoa-Pisa line. Pian della Fioba can be reached by car along the provincial road that climbs from Massa towards Passo del Vestito; many events require a short hike from the meeting points.
All shows are free and do not require booking. Appropriate mountain clothing and footwear are recommended.
