The intercultural festival in the heart of Carrara
Established in 2006, Con-vivere Carrara Festival is a cultural event that animates the historic center of Carrara, in the province of Massa-Carrara, Tuscany, every year in early September. Promoted and organized by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Carrara, the festival is dedicated to the theme of coexistence between cultures, religions, generations, and worldviews. Each edition revolves around a keyword that guides lectures, performances, and meetings: a common thread that invites the city to reflect on the major issues of the present.
Con-vivere is a deeply multidisciplinary festival. Each edition features over seventy events spread over four days, designed for a broad and curious audience. The heart of the festival lies in the talks — lectures, dialogues, and conversations with scholars, writers, philosophers, scientists, and prominent figures from the Italian and international cultural scene — complemented by a program that spans theater, live music, art exhibitions, film screenings, guided walks to discover the local area, and workshops for both adults and children.
Alongside cultural reflection, Con-vivere pays great attention to cuisine and local flavors. During the festival, restaurants and venues in the center offer themed menus inspired by the edition's keyword, while cooking workshops and tastings take the public on a journey through Apuan culinary traditions and world cuisines. It is a way to experience the festival at the table, blending the pleasure of conviviality with the joy of discovery.
With over 25,000 attendees per edition, Con-vivere has become deeply rooted in the life of Carrara and the entire Apuan area. The squares, historic palaces, and cultural spaces of the city are transformed into places of encounter and debate, enlivened by the work of volunteers — the famous "orange shirts" — and the participation of local schools and youth. More than just a series of events, Con-vivere is a collective experience that invites the community to think together about the future of coexistence.
The new edition of Con-vivere Carrara Festival will be held in Carrara from September 10th to 13th, 2026, and will be dedicated to the theme 'Living'. The festival will address major issues related to how humans live in and transform places: the home, urban space, the landscape, and the planet, in an era of profound environmental and social change.
The scientific consultancy for this edition is entrusted to Elena Granata, an urban planner and professor of Urban Planning at the Politecnico di Milano, who has been working for years on issues of cities, the environment, and new forms of living. As usual, over seventy events will be built around this theme, including talks, performances, exhibitions, workshops, and gastronomic offerings.
The detailed program, including guests and times for individual appointments, will be published by the organization in the weeks preceding the festival on the official website con-vivere.it.
The complete program for the 2026 edition, including guests, times, and venues for individual events, has not yet been published. The dates (September 10-13, 2026), the theme 'Living', and the scientific consultancy of urban planner Elena Granata are confirmed.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Carrara. By train, the reference station is Carrara-Avenza, connected to the center by local buses; by car, you can reach Carrara via the A12 motorway (Carrara exit) or the A15. The nearest airport is Pisa.
Most events are free of charge; some performances or special appointments may require booking. It is recommended to check the official program at con-vivere.it.
