A weekend featuring gospel music and theatre in the villages of the Municipality of Palaia
In the heart of the Valdera region, in the province of Pisa, the Municipality of Palaia dedicates an entire weekend to live music and theatre, bringing art directly to its most characteristic villages. This event combines two very different evenings linked by a common thread: the desire to promote the small towns of the Tuscan countryside through culture, bringing historic churches and community theatres to life with performances open to everyone.
The first evening takes place in Montefoscoli, one of the most evocative hamlets in the Palaia area. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta hosts a gospel concert by the St. Jacob's Choir, a choral group that fills the church aisles with the warm, engaging sounds of the gospel tradition. The concert holds special significance as it celebrates two important milestones for Montefoscoli: the 30th anniversary of the Museum of Peasant Civilization and the 200th anniversary of the death of Andrea Vaccร Berlinghieri, an illustrious physician and surgeon linked to these lands. The intimate, cozy setting makes the performance an intense experience where music and heritage merge.
The second day moves to the main town of Palaia, at the Teatro Don Vegni, which hosts a theatrical and musical performance staged by the Ensemble Group of the Accademia Musicale Il Pentagramma, an association active in the area with music, singing, and instrumental courses. The performance weaves together acting and live music, offering the audience a moment of community theatre that showcases local energy and talent.
This weekend is designed for those who love experiencing culture in authentic settings, away from the mainstream circuits and in close contact with local communities. Visiting Palaia and Montefoscoli during these evenings also means discovering a corner of Tuscany made of rolling hills, medieval villages, and living traditions. The events, which are free to attend, are an invitation to combine a passion for music and theatre with a slow-paced rediscovery of the Valdera villages.
The 2026 edition brought the villages of Palaia to life with two consecutive evenings dedicated to music and theatre, confirming the territory's commitment to bringing culture to its smallest towns.
The programme combined an atmospheric choral concert with a community theatre performance, highlighting historic sites such as the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Montefoscoli and the Teatro Don Vegni in Palaia.
Palaia can be reached by car via the SS439 Sarzanese-Valdera road; from Pisa and Florence, take the FI-PI-LI expressway, exit at Pontedera, and continue towards Palaia (about 15 km from Pontedera). The hamlet of Montefoscoli is just a few kilometres from the town centre.
Free admission to both events, with booking recommended for the performance at the Teatro Don Vegni.
