The Muro Leccese Carnival: a blend of masks, parties, and Salento traditions
In the heart of Salento, the Muro Leccese Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in Muro Leccese, a small town in the Province of Lecce, Puglia. For a few days, the town centre and the Mercato delle Idee are filled with masks, confetti, music, and laughter, bringing together locals of all ages for a celebration with a strong sense of community.
The event has two sides. On one hand, there is the contemporary masquerade party, featuring DJ sets, entertainment, a food & beverage area, and prizes for the best individual and group costumes. On the other, the deep-rooted Salento traditions preserved by local associations. A highlight is the funeral procession of the Carnival puppet organized by the "Mondo Nuovo" association: on the final day, a puppet representing Carnival is mourned in a traditional house in the historic centre and then carried through the streets, following an ancient ritual that concludes with the burning of the puppet, accompanied by local tarallucci biscuits and wine.
At the end of Carnival, with the arrival of Lent, another typical custom emerges: the caremme, female-shaped puppets made of straw and old black rags, which are displayed on balconies and terraces after Ash Wednesday. Once burned or "shot" at Easter, they represented a symbolic exorcism of hardship and hunger, a testament to the peasant culture of Salento.
Many events of the Muro Leccese Carnival take place at the Mercato delle Idee, a former covered market restored and transformed into a cultural incubator managed by Dilinò Aps as part of the "Luoghi Comuni" project by the Puglia Region. This space, a hub of the Galattica network, hosts concerts, workshops, shows, and parties dedicated to children, families, and young people.
The Muro Leccese Carnival is an opportunity to experience Muro Leccese in its most convivial dimension, between the colourful festivities for the little ones and the rituals that tell the story of the town and the entire Salento region.
The 2026 Muro Leccese Carnival brought Muro Leccese to life on 16 and 17 February, with the Mercato delle Idee as the beating heart of the festival. Monday, 16 February, the Galactic Children's Ball dedicated the evening to the little ones, with games, masks, and entertainment. Tuesday, 17 February, on Shrove Tuesday, the Galactic Muro Leccese Carnival brought the community together for a big masquerade party with music, DJ sets, a food & beverage area, and the awarding of the best individual and group costumes. Completing the picture were the folk traditions of the Salento village, from the Carnival puppet procession to the Lenten caremme.
The main events are held at the Mercato delle Idee (Via Leonardo da Vinci / Via Trento) and in the streets of the historic centre of Muro Leccese (LE).
By car from the SS275 or SS16, exit at Maglie, then follow signs for Muro Leccese. The nearest train station is Maglie (Ferrovie del Sud Est), a few kilometres away; the reference airport is Brindisi-Salento.
