Classical and jazz music in the medieval castle of Murlo, in the Sienese hills
The Murlo Music Week (also known as the Murlo Music Festival) is the summer event that transforms the small medieval village of Murlo, in the province of Siena, into a refined stage for classical and jazz music. Founded in 2001 by the Pro Loco of Murlo and the Murlo Cultural Association, the festival has spent over twenty years becoming a landmark for music lovers from across Tuscany and beyond.
Almost all concerts take place in the Piazza delle Carceri, inside the ancient Murlo castle: a natural amphitheatre enclosed by the village's medieval walls, where music resonates under the starry summer sky. One concert of the series is traditionally hosted in the charming cloister of the church in the hamlet of Casciano, extending the musical experience to other corners of the municipal territory.
The program alternates between different repertoires and ensemblesโpiano recitals, chamber music, trios, operatic voices, and jazz eveningsโwith a special focus on established young performers alongside musicians from the festival's resident ensemble. Over the years, Murlo has welcomed prestigious artists such as cellist Silvia Chiesa and pianist Maurizio Baglini, the Trio di Parma, and cellist Alain Meunier. The collaboration with the Accademia Musicale Chigiana of Siena, one of Italy's most important musical institutions, also brings names from the Chigiana International Festival & Summer Academy calendar to Murlo.
Attending a concert during the Music Week also means discovering Murlo, a village famous for its Etruscan origins and the Antiquarium of Poggio Civitate, and enjoying the hospitality of the Crete Senesi and the Tuscan countryside. Concerts generally begin at 9:15 PM, after sunset, when the summer temperature becomes pleasant and the village lights up with a unique atmosphere.
Admission to the concerts is ticketed, with affordable pricing and free entry for children under 15; for the main evenings, booking is recommended or required. Updated information, dates, and the full program for the current edition are published by the Pro Loco of Murlo and the municipal Tourist Office.
The 2026 edition of the Murlo Music Week takes place as tradition dictates between late July and the first days of August, with a series of evening concerts in the Piazza delle Carceri of the Murlo castle and one evening in the cloister of the church in Casciano.
Among the confirmed events, the concert on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 9:15 PM, stands out, held as part of the Chigiana International Festival & Summer Academy: featuring a trio composed of Giuseppe Ettorre (double bass, master at the Accademia Chigiana), Ettore Pagano (cello, winner of the 2026 Queen Elizabeth Competition), and Pierluigi Di Tella (piano).
The complete program of the edition, with all dates and performers, is published by the Pro Loco of Murlo and the municipal Tourist Office in the weeks preceding the event.
The full program of the other concerts for the 2026 edition (generally six evenings at the Murlo castle plus one in the cloister of the Casciano church) will be announced by the Pro Loco of Murlo and the municipal Tourist Office in the weeks preceding the festival.
