About Murgo Carnival

As one of the oldest and most beloved carnivals in Sicily, the Murgo Carnival of Gioiosa Marea brings the seaside village in the province of Messina to life for over a month. The absolute star is the Murgo, a mask portraying a conductor in a tailcoat and top hat, accompanied by the wild Racchia. Parades of allegorical floats, masked groups, neighborhood 'murghe', music, and dancing transform the seafront and town squares into a grand open-air stage.

A historic carnival overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea

The Murgo Carnival, also known as the Gioiosa Marea Carnival, is one of the most deeply rooted and spectacular events in the province of Messina and all of Sicily. It takes place in Gioiosa Marea, a charming seaside village overlooking the Gulf of Patti, and for over a month, it transforms the historic center, the Lungomare Canapè, and the town squares into a whirlwind of parades, music, and color.

The origins: the 'murga' and the return from Argentina

The roots of the carnival date back to the post-World War II era. The murga was originally a small orchestra that enlivened the town with cheerful music, a phenomenon introduced by Gioiosa Marea emigrants returning from Argentina, where the 'murga' represented a form of street theater combining music, dance, acting, and costumes. It is said that the first Murgo was Captain Turi Zampino, a fisherman who emigrated to Argentina and returned home with his violin to start an orchestra featuring nautical instruments like the 'brogna' (conch shell) and the 'friscalettu' (flute).

The Murgo and the Racchia

The heart of the festival is the Murgo mask, representing an eccentric conductor traditionally dressed in a colorful satin tailcoat, top hat, and white gloves: he is the one who leads the festivities. Alongside the Murgo parades the Racchia, a band formed by a group of university students that has evolved over the years into a procession open to people of all ages, kicking off the carnival with a spontaneous performance of bizarre costumes and extravagant instruments.

Parades, floats, and tradition

The program spans numerous days: the opening parade of the Racchia, the neighborhood 'murghe', the grand processions of allegorical floats and masked groups, events in the hamlet of San Giorgio, dance evenings, and the Murgo Festival in the picturesque Piazzetta della Murga. There is no shortage of tastings of 'chiacchiere' (carnival pastries) and local food and wine products, in an atmosphere that blends satire, folk tradition, and joy.

A symbol of identity

For Gioiosa Marea, the Murgo Carnival is much more than just a party: it is an element of community identity that attracts visitors from all over Sicily and the rest of Italy every year. The organization is managed by the 'Comitato Carnevale Storico del Murgo' with the support of the Municipal Administration of Gioiosa Marea.
