The widespread jazz festival of the Peligna Valley stops in Campo di Giove, among the trails of the Majella
Muntagninjazz is one of the most original jazz festivals in Abruzzo: a widespread and itinerant event that every summer brings great live music to the villages, forests, and mountains of Central Abruzzo, from the Peligna Valley to the passes of the Majella, in the province of L'Aquila. Founded in 2007 and organized by the Muntagninjazz APS association, the festival involves about ten municipalities and dozens of different locations, transforming squares, natural theaters, springs, and mountain trails into open-air stages.
The Municipality of Campo di Giove, a small village of just under a thousand inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 1064 meters, is the highest inhabited center in the entire Majella National Park and is among the most fascinating stops on the program. Here, the festival chooses the formula that has become its hallmark: the hike-concert, a walk in nature that culminates in live music.
The Campo di Giove stop is dedicated to those who love experiencing jazz immersed in the high mountain environment. It is a morning hike that, starting from the village, climbs along the trails of the Majella up to Guado di Coccia, the pass located at about 1670 meters above sea level, which marks one of the most spectacular passages of the massif. The audience walks along the trail to the most suggestive point, where the high-altitude concert awaits them, with the peaks of Monte Amaro and Tavola Rotonda in the background. It is an experience that combines trekking, conviviality, and musical listening in a unique natural setting, in the heart of the Majella Park.
Muntagninjazz is not just a series of concerts: it is a cultural project that enhances the territory of Central Abruzzo and its mountains. Alongside the evenings in the village squares and the major concerts in Sulmona, the festival offers hike-concerts that accompany the public to the most beautiful places in the area, between the Majella National Park and the surrounding nature reserves. The Campo di Giove stop, together with that of Anversa degli Abruzzi, has been included in the national project I-Jazz "Trasform-Azioni", which involves some of the main Italian festivals and includes the creation of a podcast on the identity narrative of the host territories. The formula has made Muntagninjazz a recognized model of a widespread festival, capable of weaving together music, art, environment, and sustainable tourism throughout the province of L'Aquila.
Hosting a stop of Muntagninjazz also means discovering Campo di Giove, a village of medieval origins overlooking a wide plateau, once occupied by a moraine lake, surrounded by the peaks of the Majella. A summer resort and ski destination in winter, Campo di Giove is a gateway to numerous hiking itineraries. The combination of the historic center, the high-altitude trails of Guado di Coccia, and quality jazz makes a day in Campo di Giove one of the most beloved experiences of the entire festival, in the heart of the Abruzzo Region.
For its twentieth anniversary, Muntagninjazz returns from July 23 to August 22, 2026, with a program that blends jazz, singer-songwriter music, hiking, theater, and original productions. The twentieth-anniversary edition features over 100 events across 32 days, distributed across ten municipalities of Central Abruzzo and 23 locations: Sulmona, Introdacqua, Capestrano, Pratola Peligna, Raiano, Pacentro, Anversa degli Abruzzi, Prezza, Campo di Giove, and Bugnara.
In 2026, Campo di Giove is once again among the stops of the widespread festival, with the hike-concert formula that has brought the public towards Guado di Coccia over the years, among the high-altitude trails of the Majella National Park. At the moment, the specific date of the Campo di Giove stop has not yet been published: the detailed program is released in stages on the festival's official channels in the weeks leading up to the events.
Muntagninjazz 2026 — 20th edition (anniversary), July 23 – August 22, 2026. Over 100 events, 32 days, 10 municipalities, 23 locations.
The date and program for the Campo di Giove stop have not yet been announced. In previous years, the Campo di Giove stop has hosted a hike-concert towards Guado di Coccia, included in the national project I-Jazz "Trasform-Azioni". The complete program is published progressively on the official website muntagninjazz.it.
Campo di Giove can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (Sulmona-Pratola Peligna exit), continuing along the Peligna Valley towards the Majella. The village has a small train station on the scenic Sulmona-Isernia line (the so-called Trans-Siberian of Italy); the reference hub for major lines is Sulmona, the junction for connections to Rome, Pescara, and L'Aquila.
The Campo di Giove stop is a hike-concert towards Guado di Coccia: it is necessary to wear trekking shoes, bring water, a hat, and clothing suitable for the mountains, with departure generally in the morning. Participation usually requires booking. For times, meeting points, trail difficulty, and costs, it is advisable to consult the official website muntagninjazz.it and the festival's social media channels, or to contact the organizers.
