The literature, theatre, and arts festival for children and teenagers in Borgo San Lorenzo
Mugello da Fiaba is a grand celebration of literature, theatre, and the arts for children and young people, held every spring in Borgo San Lorenzo, the main town of the Mugello area in the province of Florence, Tuscany. Established in 2014, the festival has quickly become a highly anticipated event for families, schools, and children's literature enthusiasts, attracting authors, illustrators, actors, and musicians to the Mugello region.
For about seven days, the festival offers a packed programme: meetings with authors, read-aloud sessions, creative workshops, theatrical performances, concerts, group games, and festive moments. The goal is clear and precious: to bring children closer to books and reading through play, art, and hands-on experience, while simultaneously involving local schools with the Fuoriclasse educational workshops, reserved for classes during the morning sessions.
Starting with the 2026 edition, the festival found its new home in the Foro Boario of Borgo San Lorenzo, a recently renovated space that has become the nerve centre of the event, featuring workshop rooms, exhibition areas, an educational farm, a refreshment area, and a café. Notable installations and exhibitions that define the festival include Pinocchio sugli scarti, a tribute to Collodi, the Un ponte di libri exhibition dedicated to Jella Lepman, and the Giant Goose Game.
Each edition is built around a thematic thread. The 2026 edition, the twelfth, focused on the theme «Visions and Visionaries», an invitation to look beyond the present through imagination, culture, and participation, with the official illustration created by Fabrizio Silei, a writer and illustrator and winner of the Andersen Award. Among the most beloved moments are the evening Fiabe Jazz concert and theatrical performances created with and for children.
A key strength of Mugello da Fiaba is the completely free admission to all initiatives: a choice that makes the festival accessible to all families and establishes it as one of the most important cultural events for children in Tuscany. Organised by Officina Cu.Bo and the ReMida Centre together with the Municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo, the festival is also an opportunity to discover the Mugello, a land of hills, villages, and traditions just a few kilometres from Florence.
The 2026 edition of Mugello da Fiaba, the twelfth, was held from 4 to 10 May 2026 in Borgo San Lorenzo, inaugurating the new Foro Boario venue. The central theme was «Visions and Visionaries», with the official illustration signed by Fabrizio Silei, winner of the Andersen Award.
