The mountain Christmas market in the heart of Brentonico, on Monte Baldo
In the heart of the Brentonico Plateau, at the foot of Monte Baldo, the Municipality of Brentonico (Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige) celebrates its Mountain Christmas every year—a holiday market that accompanies the community and visitors from early December until Epiphany. The event is part of the broader Vallagarina Christmas program, promoted by the Rovereto and Vallagarina Tourist Board.
Throughout the holiday season, Via Roma in the historic center is dressed for the occasion: illuminated pines and trees, large wooden educational games, tables and benches, and characteristic wooden stalls lining the street. Here, local vendors and associations offer regional food and wine specialties, from traditional canederli to desserts and dinner options, in the spirit of sharing typical of small mountain villages.
The calendar unfolds throughout the Christmas period with numerous initiatives:
The most anticipated moment is the Living Nativity on Christmas Eve, organized by the La Colonnina association, with performances in the afternoon and late evening, followed by a torchlight procession and midnight Mass in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The festivities conclude at Epiphany with the arrival of the Befana.
Mountain Christmas is, above all, a community event: as highlighted by the local administration, it strengthens the sense of belonging and celebrates the alpine traditions of Brentonico. The event is organized by the Municipality of Brentonico together with the Pro Loco Brentonico Monte Baldo, with the support of numerous local associations.
The 2025-2026 Mountain Christmas kicked off on Sunday, December 7, 2025, with the tree lighting on Via Roma (4:00 PM), accompanied by the Coro Soldanella and local primary schools, "Music in the Crypt" concerts, and a choral performance in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The following days featured a hobbyist market, open kitchens serving traditional canederli, and food offerings curated by local associations.
The heart of the festivities was the Living Nativity on Christmas Eve (December 24), with performances at 3:00 PM and 11:00 PM, followed by a torchlight procession and midnight Mass. There were also snowshoeing trips and moonlight excursions on Monte Baldo, visits to the Mulino Zeni, children's workshops, and nativity scenes in the hamlets. The event closed on January 5, 2026, with the traditional descent of the Befana.
