The "sailing butterflies" flying over the water in the Brenta Dolomites
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Moth National Championship – Molveno Cup is one of the most anticipated events on the Italian sailing calendar, held on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Molveno, in the municipality of Molveno, in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Considered one of Italy's most beautiful lakes and frequently awarded as the best swimmable lake by Legambiente and the Touring Club Italiano, Molveno offers a unique setting: a body of water nestled between the imposing walls of the Brenta Dolomites and the Paganella massif.
The undisputed stars are the Moth class boats, small, lightweight, and hyper-technological hulls equipped with foils—underwater wings that reduce drag and allow the boat to lift up and literally "fly" above the lake's surface. It is no coincidence they are nicknamed the "sailing butterflies": they reach impressive speeds and offer the public a high-level technical spectacle, with acrobatic maneuvers that leave spectators on the shore breathless.
The Molveno Cup attracts crews from all over Europe, who compete for the title in a series of regattas spread over the weekend. The event, organized by the Velica Molveno ASD association under the aegis of the Italian Sailing Federation, has established itself in just a few years as a key stop for the Moth class, bringing some of the discipline's best athletes to Molveno.
The beauty of the Molveno Cup is that the regattas can be comfortably watched from the Lido di Molveno beach, without needing to be an expert enthusiast: just let yourself be amazed by the boats rising on their foils. The atmosphere is that of a sporting festival in touch with nature, in one of the most charming villages in Trentino, an ideal starting point for excursions and outdoor activities in the Brenta Dolomites and on the Paganella.
The 2026 edition of the Moth National Championship – Molveno Cup does not yet have official dates communicated at the time of writing. In previous years, the event has taken place in September on Lake Molveno, attracting crews from all over Europe for a series of Moth class regattas, featuring the boats with foils that "fly" over the water. The detailed program and dates will be published by the Velica Molveno ASD association, under the aegis of the Italian Sailing Federation.
Molveno is located in the Province of Trento, on the Paganella Plateau. By car, it can be reached from the A22 Brenner motorway (exit San Michele all'Adige-Mezzocorona) by continuing towards the Val di Non and Andalo-Molveno. In summer, the Trentino Trasporti public transport service is available from the Trento train station.
The competitions take place on Lake Molveno and are visible directly from the Lido beach. Access to the lakeside and the spectator area is free.
