About Cristo Lungo Festival

Every year, during the last week of August, the medieval village of Castroreale in the province of Messina hosts its most cherished event: the Most Holy Crucifix Festival, known to all as the Cristo Lungo Festival or, in the local dialect, 'U Signuri Longu'. The 17th-century crucifix statue is hoisted onto a towering cypress pole and carried in procession through the village streets, soaring above the rooftops. Three days of devotion, brass band music, performances, and fireworks draw pilgrims and curious visitors from across Sicily.

One of Sicily's most fascinating processions

The Most Holy Crucifix Festival, universally known as the Cristo Lungo Festival (in Sicilian 'U Signuri Longu), is the most significant and identity-defining celebration of the Municipality of Castroreale, a charming hillside village in the province of Messina, Sicily. Recognized as a major highlight of the island's religious tourism, the festival transforms the medieval historic center into a three-day stage for faith, tradition, and folklore.

The Cristo Lungo: a statue that dominates the village

The heart of the festival is the 17th-century crucifix statue, a fine life-sized papier-mâché work by an unknown sculptor from the 1600s, kept for most of the year on the high altar of the Church of Sant'Agata. During the festivities, the effigy is secured to an extremely long cypress pole, approximately 13-14 meters high, and raised vertically. In this way, the Crucifix towers over all the village buildings, except for the Mother Church, and remains visible even from the most distant houses and hillside districts. The movement of the massive cross through the narrow streets, expertly guided by the bearers using poles, is a spectacle filled with tension and awe.

The origins: the 1854 cholera outbreak

Popular tradition traces the festival back to 1854, when a terrible cholera epidemic devastated Messina. Castroreale, tucked away from the ports, was spared, and the community attributed this grace to the intercession of the Crucifix. Legend tells of the miraculous healing of a woman during a procession with the sacred image. The towering pole was supposedly created to allow sick believers to witness the passage of the cross directly from their balconies without having to go out into the street. Older documents confirm that the devotion existed as early as the 17th century; the precise origin remains shrouded in legend.

Three days of sacred and popular celebration

The festivities traditionally take place from August 23rd to 25th. The opening is marked by the solemn transfer of the Crucifix from the Church of Sant'Agata to the Mother Church, where it remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful. The highlight is August 25th, marked by:

  • Blank shots and church bells ringing at dawn;
  • Morning holy masses and the solemn celebration presided over by the Archbishop of Messina;
  • The tour of the village streets by the brass band, historically the M° Settimo Sardo band;
  • The grand Cristo Lungo procession in the late afternoon, with the return of the statue to the Church of Sant'Agata;
  • The evening brass band concert in Piazza Duomo;
  • The fireworks display to close the day.

Castroreale, a village to discover

Ranked among the most picturesque villages in the Messina area, Castroreale offers visitors a labyrinth of medieval alleys, churches rich in artwork, and sweeping views over the Gulf of Patti and the Aeolian Islands. The festival is the perfect opportunity to discover the identity of this municipality and experience one of the most authentic expressions of popular religiosity in Sicily.
