The patronal festival of Milici and the tradition of the "miraculi"

The San Rocco Festival is the patronal feast of the Milici district, in the municipality of Rodì Milici, in the province of Messina, nestled in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sicily at the foot of the Nebrodi mountains. According to tradition, Saint Roch died on August 16, 1327, at the age of thirty-two; for this reason, his liturgical celebration falls every year on August 16th, while the most important civil and popular festivities take place on the following Sunday. It is one of the most anticipated events for the community, drawing back emigrants and families originally from the town for the summer.
The most characteristic and defining moment is that of the "miraculi". In the afternoon, around 2:00 PM, amidst the heat of the Sicilian August, the statue of San Rocco leaves the church of Santa Maria. A firecracker blast announces the start: to the sound of music and drums, the fercolo (processional float) is carried at a run along the perimeter of Piazza Santa Maria and stopped suddenly at regular intervals. During these pauses, parents, especially mothers, lift their children and place them on the saint's float, invoking his intercession for the health and protection of the little ones. This is why the festival is known as "a festa di carùsi", the children's festival.
The day combines religious and festive dimensions: the re-enactment of the miracles performed by the saint is followed by the solemn procession of the statue through the streets of the village and culminates in the celebration of Holy Mass. In recent years, the parish community and the municipal administration have enriched the festivities with cultural initiatives, such as photographic and art exhibitions dedicated to the memory of the festival and the relationship between the town and its patron.
Experiencing the San Rocco Festival in Milici means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic popular religious traditions of the Messina area, where collective devotion, the running of the float, and the ancient gesture of entrusting children to the saint tell the deep identity of this Sicilian community.
For the 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival in Milici, a village in Rodì Milici (ME), the official program has not yet been published. The festival is traditionally linked to August 16th, the day of the saint's liturgical celebration, and the following Sunday, when the "miraculi" and the procession take place. The final dates and times will be communicated by the Municipality of Rodì Milici and the parish in the weeks leading up to the event.
Rodì Milici and the village of Milici are located in north-eastern Sicily, in the province of Messina. By car, they can be reached from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto exit and continuing inland. The nearest train station is Barcellona-Castroreale on the Tyrrhenian line; the reference airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Palermo-Punta Raisi.
The festivities are concentrated on August 16th and the following Sunday. Admission to all events is free. It is advisable to protect yourself from the sun and the heat of the early afternoon, when the "miraculi" take place.
