The patronal feast of Santa Lucia del Mela, blending centuries-old faith, the procession of the vara, and spectacular performances
The Our Lady of the Snows Festival is the patronal celebration of Santa Lucia del Mela, an ancient village in the Province of Messina nestled on the slopes of the Nebrodi mountains in Sicily. Every year, on August 5th, the town gathers around its Sanctuary for one of the oldest and most deeply rooted devotions in the Mamertine territory, attracting both faithful and visitors from neighboring towns.
The festival commemorates the miracle of Our Lady of the Snows: according to tradition, on the night between August 4th and 5th, 352 AD, the Virgin appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius and the Roman patrician John, indicating with a miraculous summer snowfall on the Esquiline Hill the site where the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome would be built. In Santa Lucia del Mela, this cult has been documented for centuries and is rooted in ancient popular devotion.
The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snows, built on the ruins of the medieval castle overlooking the village. Inside, it houses the famous wooden statue, a copy of the original created in 1529 by the sculptor Antonello Gagini, described by art historians as one of the artist's most sublime and delicate works. This statue, placed on an ornate, flower-adorned vara (float), is carried in procession on the day of the feast.
The festivities begin with a novena of preparation, marked by the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass. On August 5th, the solemn Pontifical Mass is celebrated, followed in the afternoon by the grand procession that winds through the festively illuminated streets of the historic center, while the hill of the Madonna glows with multicolored lights. One of the most anticipated events is the traditional Palio of Our Lady of the Snows, a moment of popular participation that involves the entire community.
Beyond its religious dimension, the Our Lady of the Snows Festival offers the town days of music, culture, and entertainment: concerts, band performances, exhibitions, and the traditional fireworks that light up the castle, creating the most evocative image of the festival. It is an event that blends the town's spirituality with the warmth of the Sicilian summer in one of the most characteristic villages in the Province of Messina.
The Our Lady of the Snows Festival returns to Santa Lucia del Mela (ME) on August 5, 2026, in the tradition of an ancient devotion. As every year, the festivities include the novena of preparation, the solemn Pontifical Mass, the grand procession of the wooden statue (a copy of Gagini's 1529 work) through the festively illuminated streets, and the traditional Palio of Our Lady of the Snows.
Alongside the religious rites, the civil calendar will offer evenings of music, band performances, and the evocative fireworks over the castle. The complete program, including the times of the celebrations and the names of the artists, will be announced by the Municipality of Santa Lucia del Mela and the Organizing Committee closer to the event.
