The Maria SS. di Trapani Festival is the patronal celebration of Tonnarella, a bustling seaside hamlet in the Municipality of Furnari, located in the Province of Messina on the Tyrrhenian side of Sicily. Traditionally held on the second Sunday of August, it is considered the most anticipated event of the summer, drawing thousands of visitors from neighboring towns and vacationers who fill the beaches of the gulf.
According to local tradition, the devotion stems from a vow made by Trapani fishermen caught in a violent storm at sea: they promised the Madonna they would build a chapel in her honor if they reached the shore safely. Upon arriving at the beach of Tonnarella, they fulfilled their promise by building a church that still houses the statue of the Virgin today. This episode explains the deep bond between the Madonna di Trapani and the seafaring community, who venerate her as the protector of fishermen and sailors.
The heart of the festival is the sea procession, one of the most evocative rites on the Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast. After parading through the village streets, the statue of the Madonna is hoisted onto a decorated boat that leads a long flotilla of vessels. The statue sails past the beaches of Tonnarella, Falcone, and Marchesana, greeted by swimmers diving into the sea and faithful followers watching from the shore. The day concludes late in the evening with a grand fireworks display over the water.
Celebrations begin days in advance with a novena and religious services at the Tonnarella parish, culminating on the weekend with solemn Holy Masses, the procession of the statue through the streets of the seaside community, and the Sunday sea procession. Alongside the liturgical program, the evenings offer musical entertainment in the square and food stalls serving traditional Sicilian dishes and sweets, creating an atmosphere of popular celebration that unites devotion and conviviality.
For the community of Tonnarella and the entire Municipality of Furnari, the Maria SS. di Trapani Festival represents much more than a religious anniversary: it is a moment of collective identity, where the seaside village reconnects with its roots, welcomes those who have returned for the holidays, and renews the bond with the sea that has always shaped its life.
