Castel Morrone's most beloved August festival, featuring local flavors, music, and dancing

For over thirty years, the Morrone Fresella Festival has been the most anticipated summer event in Castel Morrone, a hillside village in the province of Caserta, in the heart of Campania. Every year, in the second week of August, the town fills with visitors drawn by the aroma of freshly prepared bread and the music that resonates late into the night. It is the festival that, more than any other, brings together the entire local community and the many guests arriving from neighboring towns and the Naples metropolitan area.
The heart of the event is the fresella, a typical toasted bread from the Mediterranean and Southern Italian tradition. In Castel Morrone, it is served in its most genuine version: soaked and then topped with fresh tomato, mozzarella, and locally produced extra virgin olive oil, once processed in the town's ancient mill. At the food stalls set up in the municipal park, you can taste the fresella and numerous other specialties from the Caserta region, in a journey of simple and authentic flavors at affordable prices.
For several consecutive evenings, the festival offers a rich entertainment program. The squares and the park grounds transform into a large open-air dance floor dedicated primarily to group dancing and ballroom dancing, with live music, DJ sets, and shows. In recent editions, well-known names from Neapolitan music and cabaret have taken the stage, getting audiences of all ages dancing until late at night.
The Morrone Fresella Festival was created in 1990 by Giuseppina Cuomo and has never stopped growing since, now boasting over thirty editions. In 2024, the event celebrated its 34th year, confirming its status as the most visited event in Castel Morrone. The organization is currently managed by the Associazione LiberaMente Castel Morrone, which renews the appointment every summer, keeping alive a ritual that has become a true identity for the town.
Nestled among the hills overlooking the Caserta plain, Castel Morrone is a small town rich in history, also famous for its role during the Garibaldian Battle of the Volturno. The festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the village, stroll through its alleys, and savor local cuisine in a popular festive atmosphere. For the inhabitants, it is much more than a gastronomic event: it is the moment when the community gathers and shows its hospitality to visitors.
The Morrone Fresella Festival is expected to return in the summer of 2026 at the Ganci-Pignatelli Municipal Park in Castel Morrone, Campania. Awaiting the official announcement from the Associazione LiberaMente Castel Morrone, one can expect the usual formula: food stalls with the typical fresella and local products from the Caserta region, evenings of live music, and group dancing, with free admission.
Castel Morrone is located just a few kilometers from Caserta. By car, it can be reached from the Caserta Sud (A1) motorway exit, continuing along the provincial roads towards the village. The event takes place at the Ganci-Pignatelli Municipal Park, in the Largisi area.
Admission to the festival is free. Food stalls and shows take place in the evening, starting from late afternoon until late at night.
