The Nativity comes to life between the Borgo, the Corpo di Cristo Complex, and the Grotta dell'Angelo in Preturo
In the period between Christmas and Epiphany, Montoro — a town in the province of Avellino, Campania, established in 2013 from the merger of Montoro Inferiore and Montoro Superiore — transforms some of its most beautiful sites into a vast open-air nativity scene. The Montoro Living Nativity does not have a single location: it is a traveling performance involving the town's hamlets, with the Corpo di Cristo Monumental Complex in the Borgo district and the Grotta dell'Angelo in Preturo serving as the main stages. It is organized by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco Città di Montoro and numerous local associations as part of the «Christmas in Montoro» program.
The Corpo di Cristo monastery, with its adjoining church of San Leucio, stands in the highest part of the Borgo district, at the foot of the hill where the remains of the Lombard castle are preserved. The complex's origins date back to the military hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, documented as early as 1179; the monastery itself was founded in 1577 by concession of Pope Gregory XIII, uniting the 15th-century church of the Corpo di Cristo and the late 14th-century priory of San Cristoforo into a single entity. The church features a single-nave layout with side niches and chapels, a barrel vault with lunettes decorated with stucco and frescoes, and houses a 1617 organ that remains largely original. After the suppression in 1807, the building passed into private hands before being repurchased by the Municipality and restored between the late eighties and subsequent years, with further work in 2015. It is in this setting that the Nativity scenes come to life during the festival evenings.
The other iconic site of the nativity is the Grotta dell'Angelo (or Cave of Saint Michael) in Preturo, a natural cavity that opens onto a scenic ridge between Mount Bufoni and Mount Romola. Inside, Byzantine-style frescoes depicting Archangel Michael, the Virgin and Child, and figures of martyrs are preserved: a rock-hewn context that, due to its atmosphere and charm, naturally lends itself to representing the cave of Bethlehem. This has been the site of the concluding event in recent editions, with the arrival of the Three Wise Men in a procession from the hamlets of Piano, Borgo, and Figlioli.
Like all living nativities, the Montoro one has its roots in the night of 1223, when Saint Francis of Assisi set up the first Nativity representation in Greccio to allow the faithful to experience the birth of Jesus in a direct and concrete way. In Irpinia, this form of popular devotion is widespread: dozens of towns reconstruct Bethlehem every winter among alleys, courtyards, and caves, restoring for a few evenings the image of a rural world made of slow gestures and artisanal work.
The living nativity is the most anticipated event of a rich Christmas calendar: the «Christmas in Montoro» program includes around thirty initiatives distributed across the town's fifteen hamlets — lighting of the community tree in the Borgo, Christmas markets, nativity scenes set up in Banzano and Misciano, Christmas concerts in Piano and Torchiati, theatrical reviews organized by the Teatro Popolare Montorese, the Santa Claus Village, and the charity Befana. A way to keep together a community of nearly twenty thousand inhabitants spread over a large territory, between the Montoro basin and the Irno valley.
The Montoro Living Nativity is not a major tourist production: it is an authentic village performance, built by residents for residents and open to those who wish to discover it. Its value lies precisely in the combination of top-tier architectural and rock-hewn heritage — the 16th-century monastery and the frescoed cave — and the spontaneous participation of Montoro families. Those arriving from Salerno or Avellino, just twenty kilometers away, will find one of the most discreet and successful corners of the Campanian Christmas.
Four evenings marked the Montoro Living Nativity between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, as part of the «Christmas in Montoro» program promoted by the Municipality with the Pro Loco Città di Montoro and the hamlet associations. The Corpo di Cristo Monumental Complex in the Borgo hosted the core of the performance: the Nativity manger, the ancient trade workshops, and the daily life scenes set up among the cloisters and spaces of the 16th-century monastery.
The final event, on January 5, 2026, traditionally closed the Montoro festivities on the eve of Epiphany, connecting to the devotional path of the Grotta dell'Angelo in Preturo and the procession of the Three Wise Men reaching the cave from the hamlets of Piano, Borgo, and Figlioli.
The Municipality did not release a single official time for all evenings: some regional tourist portals indicated evening openings for Montoro, roughly from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. In the previous edition, the January 5th event at the Grotta dell'Angelo was scheduled for 3:00 PM. It is always recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Montoro and the Pro Loco Città di Montoro.
The route winds through the spaces of the Corpo di Cristo monastery and the narrow streets of the Borgo, featuring Nativity scenes, reconstructed artisan workshops, angels, and shepherds. The edition maintains the traveling character that has always distinguished the Montoro nativity, capable of involving multiple hamlets of the town.
By car: Montoro can be reached from the Salerno–Avellino motorway junction (RA2), taking the Montoro Nord and Montoro Sud exits; the journey from Salerno and Avellino is about 20 km. The Borgo and Preturo hamlets can then be reached via local roads, following signs for the historic center. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport is about 55 km away.
On the evenings of the performance, traffic in the hamlets is restricted: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the edge of the town and continue on foot. The path is largely on natural ground, with uphill sections towards the Grotta dell'Angelo: comfortable, closed-toe shoes are recommended.
