The grand parade of allegorical floats in the heart of Salento
In the heart of the Grecรฌa Salentina, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital, the Monteroni di Lecce Carnival is a fixture that has defined local life for decades. Organized by the municipal administration of Monteroni di Lecce (Province of Lecce, Puglia) in collaboration with the San Giovanni Bosco Oratory, it is a celebration that involves the entire community: sports clubs, dance schools, musical groups, and families spend months crafting the allegorical floats and preparing costumes.
The highlight is the grand parade that winds through the town center, starting in front of the San Giovanni Bosco Oratory and ending in Piazza Falconieri, where the awards ceremony takes place. Allegorical floats, masquerade groups, and individual performers march in a colorful, lively procession set to music.
The symbol of the event is Lu Scarpalau, the official mask of the Monteroni Carnival: a character that merges two local historical figures, the scarparu (the traditional cobbler, with his brown apron and tools of the trade) and the university graduate, recognizable by their graduation cap. This image reflects both the town's artisan roots and its identity as a university city, thanks to the nearby Ecotekne campus of the University of Salento and the many students who choose to live and study in Monteroni.
The Monteroni Carnival is more than just a parade; it is the result of the hard work of many local groups, from dance schools and sports clubs to musical associations. Award categories include groups, allegorical floats, individual costumes, and pairs, with a special prize dedicated to those who best capture the spirit of Carnival. It is a free, open-air event designed for children and families, yet it also attracts many visitors who travel across Salento during the Carnival season to discover its most distinctive parades.
The 66th edition of the Monteroni di Lecce Carnival took place on Saturday, February 14, 2026, confirming its status as one of the most anticipated events of the Salento Carnival season. Organized by the municipal administration in collaboration with the San Giovanni Bosco Oratory (presided over by Father Giuseppe Spedicato), the edition focused on the theme of Love and was brought to life by the official mask, Lu Scarpalau.
As per tradition, allegorical floats, masquerade groups, individual performers, and pairs marched in a festive procession that involved numerous local associations.
Numerous local entities participated in the organization and entertainment, including Live Dancing, Stefamily, Off Balance, Ned, the Futura Monteroni football school, Palestra Action, ASD Tennis Monteroni, and the Maestro Rocco Quarta Musical Association.
The parade takes place along the streets of the center of Monteroni di Lecce (LE), starting in front of the San Giovanni Bosco Oratory and ending in Piazza Falconieri, home to the Town Hall.
Monteroni di Lecce is located about 8 km from Lecce, along the road to Gallipoli. It can be reached by car via the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road and by train using the Ferrovie del Sud Est (Monteroni station). On the days of the parade, it is recommended to park in areas outside the center, as several streets are closed to traffic.
Participation in the parade is free.
