The oldest carnival tradition on the island of Ischia, held in the Monterone district of Forio
The Monterone Carnival is the most deeply rooted and beloved carnival tradition on the island of Ischia. It takes place in the Monterone district of Forio, in the province of Naples, and is steeped in a history spanning nearly a century: in 2026, the event celebrates its 107th edition. According to local tradition, this is where the true heart of the Ischian Carnival beats, drawing revelers and curious visitors from across the island every year.
The highlight is the grand Prince Carnival pageant, which departs from Monterone and winds through the center of Forio. It is accompanied by the historic «Città di Monterone» Band, recognizable by their green and red uniforms, featuring traditional figures such as Zappisti, Serraserristi, Triccaballacchisti, Pignattisti, and Scetavajassisti, who animate the streets with folk sounds created using pots, lids, and traditional instruments. The Prince's effigy parades triumphantly before being consigned to its fate at the end of the day.
In the evening, Monterone transforms into a grand open-air theater: the star of the show is the hilarious Masked Corrida, featuring improvised talents, original costumes, and plenty of irony, open to anyone wanting to join the fun. The festivities conclude with the most evocative and symbolic ritual of the event: the burning of the Prince Carnival effigy, set aflame in accordance with a centuries-old tradition to mark the end of Carnival.
Alongside traditional rituals, the program offers music and cabaret shows featuring artists from the Neapolitan comedy scene, as well as events dedicated to children, such as the Children's Carnival. It is an intergenerational festival that blends popular folklore with entertainment, creating an atmosphere of contagious joy that involves the entire Municipality of Forio.
Set in one of the most picturesque locations in Campania, the Monterone Carnival is much more than a simple parade: it is a piece of Forian identity, a collective ritual passed down from generation to generation. Experiencing this day means discovering the most authentic and popular side of the island of Ischia, amidst tradition, music, and the warm hospitality of the locals.
The 107th edition of the Monterone Carnival enlivened Forio, on the island of Ischia, with its usual and beloved program of popular rituals, music, and masks.
