Three evenings of jazz, swing, and Fiano wine in the courtyard of Castello Caracciolo
Every summer, the courtyard of Castello Caracciolo in Montefredane—a small town of just over two thousand inhabitants perched nearly 600 meters high in the hills of the province of Avellino—transforms into an open-air stage. MontefreeJazz is the festival that, for several seasons, has brought together local jazz ensembles, wine tastings, and Irpinian street food in a simple format that has captivated both residents and visitors from across Irpinia.
The format has remained unchanged since the first edition: three consecutive evenings in late July, one concert per night in the castle courtyard, with a program spanning classic jazz, swing, and occasional forays into rock and popular song. The stage primarily features musicians from Campania and Irpinia in small ensembles—quartets and trios—perfectly suited to the intimate setting, allowing for a close-up listening experience quite different from large summer festivals.
Music, however, is not the only attraction. Montefredane lies in the heart of the historic Fiano di Avellino production area, and the surrounding hills are considered some of the finest for this denomination. During the evenings, local wineries host tastings of the Fiano produced here, accompanied by food stalls offering local culinary delights: 'cuoppo misto' and boards of typical Irpinian products pair perfectly with the concerts. As Mayor Ciro Aquino has noted, Fiano di Montefredane is among the absolute excellences of Campanian viticulture, appreciated far beyond regional borders.
Castello Caracciolo dominates the historic center of Montefredane and serves as the town's symbol: from its vantage point, the view sweeps across the Sabato Valley and the Irpinian hills. The choice of this venue for the festival is no coincidence. The municipal administration has explicitly linked the initiative to the promotion of the historic center and its architectural heritage, combining culture, local tourism, and support for local production. For the mayor, MontefreeJazz represents "much more than a musical event": it is an opportunity to showcase the village and the beauty of its castle to an audience that often remains unaware of them.
Launched in 2023, MontefreeJazz has grown with each edition, reaching its fourth in 2026, with increasing coverage from local Irpinian press and national agencies. The organization is managed by the Pro Loco of Montefredane, working in collaboration with the Municipality of Montefredane and local wine producers. In a region like Campania, which is rich in summer festivals, the Montefredane format stands out by choosing to remain village-sized rather than chasing large numbers: visitors find a courtyard, a few dozen chairs, a glass of Fiano, and a quartet playing under the stars.
The event traditionally takes place on the last weekend of July, from Friday to Sunday. Evenings begin after sunset, when the hilltop temperature becomes more pleasant: it is the perfect time to combine a visit to the historic center, an aperitif with local wines, and the concert.
For the 4th edition, which took place from July 24th to 26th, 2026, MontefreeJazz confirmed the formula that has made it a highly anticipated event in the Irpinian summer: one concert per evening in the Castello Caracciolo courtyard, three different ensembles, and a tasting journey curated by the wineries of the Fiano di Montefredane area.
The 2026 edition was promoted by the municipal administration with the coordination of the Pro Loco of Montefredane and the support of local producers. Mayor Ciro Aquino emphasized that the festival is much more than a musical event: it is a way to showcase the village, the castle, and the surrounding landscape, while highlighting a wine that is among the most prestigious symbols of Irpinian oenological production.
Alongside the concerts, the public was able to sample local gastronomic offerings, from 'cuoppo misto' to boards of typical products, on a journey through the town's historic center.
Friday, July 24th, 2026 — Blue Jazz Quartet, with Anita Galdieri, Angelo D'Adamo, Manuel Capolupo, and Francesco Mercadante.

All concerts took place in the Castello Caracciolo courtyard in the evening. For each date, tastings of Fiano from the Montefredane area were provided by local wineries, with food stalls dedicated to Irpinian specialties.

The town sits at an altitude of nearly 600 meters: even in late July, evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. Those interested in learning more about wine can combine their evening with a visit to one of the wineries in the Fiano area, many of which welcome visitors by appointment.
