The festival of wild boar and the lumberjack pentathlon in the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines
The Montecoronaro Wild Boar Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in the upper Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines. It takes place every year in July in Montecoronaro, a small mountain hamlet in the Municipality of Verghereto, in the Province of Forlì-Cesena, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna on the border with Tuscany, in a large green area equipped with food stalls, parking, and camping space. Now in its 43rd edition in 2026, the event is organized by the Pro Loco Montecoronaro in collaboration with the local hunting team.
The heart of the festival is mountain cuisine, founded on the long hunting tradition of the area. The food stalls, with about 500 seats, offer lunches and dinners featuring typical Apennine dishes:
The evenings conclude with ballroom dancing and musical entertainment, in the best tradition of Romagnol village festivals.
The true sporting attraction of the festival is the Lumberjack Pentathlon, a competition that tests the skills and strength of lumberjacks in five traditional tests related to forest work. The competition, with an ancient tradition in Montecoronaro, is a qualifying event for the Italian championship in its category and attracts participants and spectators from all over the Apennines. Alongside the pentathlon, there are sports competitions for lumberjacks and hunters, a direct expression of the mountain and hunting culture of the village.
The two days offer a rich program suitable for all ages:
The Wild Boar Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover Montecoronaro and the territory of Verghereto, a land of springs—where the Savio River originates—and unspoiled nature, where the village festival retains its authentic and family-friendly character.
The Montecoronaro Wild Boar Festival returns on Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19, 2026, for its 43rd edition, organized by the Pro Loco Montecoronaro with the local hunting team. The food stalls, with about 500 seats, offer typical Tuscan-Romagnol Apennine dishes: polenta and tagliatelle with wild boar ragù, wild boar stewed in wine (salmì), and grilled meats. Among the most anticipated events are the Lumberjack Pentathlon, a qualifying round for the Italian championship, along with sports competitions for lumberjacks and hunters, market exhibitions, children's games, and musical entertainment with ballroom dancing on both evenings.
The detailed schedule will be published by Pro Loco Montecoronaro in the days preceding the event.
