About Montebuono Music Festival

Every late June, Montebuono, a small village in the Sabina area of the Rieti province, turns Piazza Umberto I into an open-air stage. The Music Festival is organized by the "G. Verdi" Philharmonic, one of Italy's oldest bands, founded in 1814. It features two nights of free concerts ranging from singer-songwriter music to brass ensembles, accompanied by a craft market and food stalls serving local specialties.

A Sabina village that lights up with music

Montebuono is a small town in the province of Rieti, Lazio, nestled in the hills of the Tiberina Sabina among ancient olive groves and stone farmhouses. For two days at the end of June, the historic center changes its rhythm: the Music Festival takes over Piazza Umberto I with a stage, craft stalls, and the aroma of food stands. It is a village festival in the most authentic sense of the word, born from the grassroots and grown quickly: 2026 marks its third edition.

The "G. Verdi" Philharmonic, the soul of the event

The credit goes to the "G. Verdi" Philharmonic Association of Montebuono, one of the oldest band complexes in Italy, founded in 1814 by a group of enthusiasts. For over two centuries, the band has accompanied the life of the village—processions, civil anniversaries, summer concerts—and in recent years, it has chosen to broaden its scope with a festival open to diverse musical styles. The Music Festival is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Montebuono and complements other events curated by the same association, such as the now-traditional "Agosto Montebuonese".

What kind of music to expect

The program does not chase big names; instead, it focuses on quality and variety, featuring acoustic groups, brass ensembles, and singer-songwriter projects. Recent editions have showcased voice and guitar duos, accordion players, trumpet quartets, and solo concerts, in a crescendo that carries the audience from the late afternoon until late at night. The square, intimate and naturally acoustic, does the rest: you can listen while sitting on the steps, standing in front of the stage, or at the tables of the food stands.

Market and gastronomy

Alongside the concerts, the festival features two ingredients that have become a trademark in Montebuono:

  • The craft market, with over forty stalls of creative handicrafts, costume jewelry, small antiques, and handmade products;
  • The food stands, where the signature dish is the schiacciata with mortadella, baked in the communal oven and served alongside typical Sabina products—starting with the DOP extra virgin olive oil that is the true pride of these hills.

An opportunity to discover the Sabina region

The Rieti Sabina is one of the least-traveled areas of Lazio, yet it is just over an hour from Rome. Those who arrive for the concerts will find a territory made of medieval villages, abbeys, trails among olive trees, and an olive oil tradition recognized at the European level. Montebuono, with its square and its network of very active associations, is a good starting point for a slow weekend, far from the most crowded tourist routes.

Why it's worth visiting

The Music Festival is not a major festival, and it doesn't aim to be. It is a miniature portrait of how culture works in small Italian towns: an association with two hundred years of history, a municipality providing patronage, volunteers setting up the stage and stalls, and a square that returns to being the center of the village for two evenings. All events have free admission, making it one of the simplest and most genuine outings of the Rieti summer.

Montebuono Music Festival — edition 2026

The third edition of the Montebuono Music Festival was held on Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27, 2026, in Piazza Umberto I, under the patronage of the Municipality and organized by the "G. Verdi" Philharmonic. Two evenings of free concerts — singer-songwriter music, accordion, and brass — accompanied by a craft market and food stands with typical Sabina products.

Third edition confirmed

Following the positive response of the first two editions, the "G. Verdi" Philharmonic of Montebuono brought the Music Festival back to Piazza Umberto I on the weekend of June 26 and 27, 2026. The format remained the one that worked: free open-air concerts, a creative craft market with over forty exhibitors, and food stands managed by local volunteers.

Singer-songwriter music and brass

Friday was dedicated to an intimate format, with voice, guitar, and accordion; Saturday turned up the volume, first with a trumpet quartet in the late afternoon and then with the evening concert that closed the event. A progression designed to accompany the audience from the afternoon until night, without ever losing the intimate character of the square.

The surroundings

Around the stage, the usual village machine: schiacciata with mortadella baked in the communal oven, Sabina oil, and craft stalls along the streets of the center. An event that has grown quickly and is now firmly fixed in the summer calendar of the Rieti province.

Practical information — Montebuono Music Festival

Location

Piazza Umberto I, historic center of Montebuono (RI), Lazio.

How to get there

By car — from Rome, take the A1 motorway towards Florence, exit at Ponzano Romano-Soratte, then follow the Salaria road and the Sabina provincial roads: about an hour and fifteen minutes. From Rieti, descend towards Poggio Mirteto in about 45 minutes. By train — the nearest station is Poggio Mirteto (FL1 Orte-Fiumicino line), connected to Rome Tiburtina; from there, continue by car or Cotral bus, though evening service is very limited: a car is recommended.

Admission and hours

All events are free. Concerts are concentrated between the late afternoon and the evening; the craft market and food stands remain open for the entire duration of the festival.

Tips

Bring a sweatshirt: even in late June, the evenings in the hills get chilly. Parking is available along the access roads to the village, but the historic center is pedestrianized during the event. For accommodation, it is best to look at the agritourisms in the Sabina area between Montebuono, Tarano, and Cantalupo.
