The Renaissance re-enactment in the village of Montepagano
Mons Pagus A.D. 1566 is the historical re-enactment that transforms the village of Montepagano, a hillside hamlet of Roseto degli Abruzzi in the province of Teramo, into an authentic 16th-century settlement every summer. For two evenings, the historic center comes alive with over two hundred participants in Renaissance costumes, roving theatrical performances, drummers, flag-wavers, street performers, falconers, dancers, jesters, traditional crafts, and tastings of period delicacies.
The event was not created by chance: it commemorates an episode that actually took place in 1566, when Montepagano was threatened by the arrival of an Ottoman felucca along the Adriatic coast. The memory of that near-siege becomes the narrative thread that guides visitors through the alleys, with animated scenes, theatrical moments, and reconstructions that restore the daily life of the Renaissance village.
The historic center hosts numerous points of interest, each animated by detailed performances and sets. The costumes and staging are created by the Associazione Culturale Vecchio Borgo, largely using recycled materials, in a project that combines local development with sustainability. Over the years, the event has also involved local schools and associations, becoming a defining identity event for the entire Roseto community.
Today, Mons Pagus is one of the most appreciated historical re-enactments on the Teramo coast: it combines the charm of one of Abruzzo's most beautiful villages with the philological care of a Renaissance reconstruction. For those visiting the Roseto degli Abruzzi coast in summer, climbing up to Montepagano during Mons Pagus means experiencing an evening suspended in time, amidst views of the Adriatic and the atmosphere of a town returning to the 16th century.
The historical re-enactment Mons Pagus A.D. 1566 returns to Montepagano on July 24 and 25, 2026. The historic center hosts twenty-five points of interest, each animated by performances and sets that transport the visitor back to the 16th century: flag-wavers, Renaissance music and dances, street performers, traditional crafts, and educational workshops for adults and children.
Each evening kicks off at 7:00 PM with the opening of the stands, while the historical pageant begins at 8:30 PM, winding through the village alleys. Admission is 5 euros, with free entry for people with disabilities and children under 12. For both evenings, a free shuttle service is active with departures from Piazza Olimpia, the train station, and the Montepagano junction, with return trips from the Madonnina parking lot.
The re-enactment is held in the historic center of Montepagano, a hillside hamlet of Roseto degli Abruzzi (Teramo), Abruzzo.
By car from the A14 motorway, take the Roseto degli Abruzzi exit, then head up towards Montepagano. By train, arrive at the Roseto degli Abruzzi station on the Adriatic line. During the event, a free shuttle service is available with departures from Piazza Olimpia, the train station, and the Montepagano junction.
Entry ticket is 5 euros; admission is free for people with disabilities and children under 12.
We recommend wearing comfortable footwear for the village's uphill alleys and using the free shuttles, given the limited parking availability in the historic center.
