The Nativity comes to life in La Vetere, the ancient heart of Monforte San Giorgio
In the heart of the province of Messina, Sicily, the village of Monforte San Giorgio preserves one of the most beloved Christmas traditions of the Peloritani mountains: the Living Nativity. Every year, during the festive season, the oldest district of the town dresses up and transforms into a grand open-air stage where the birth of Jesus is reenacted.
The event takes place in the evocative La Vetere district (also known as the "Arab quarter"), the historic area of the village, characterized by narrow alleys, stone staircases, and ancient houses. This medieval maze becomes a Bethlehem from two thousand years ago: along the path, lit by torches and warm lights, visitors encounter scenes of daily life from ancient Palestine.
The guided tour leads spectators to discover the events preceding the birth of Jesus, through the pages of the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. You will pass through the Roman census, priests in prayer, markets bustling with busy vendors, and the ancient workshops of artisans.
Bringing the performance to life are over a hundred actors in period costumes, all volunteers from the Monforte San Giorgio community. The Living Nativity is organized by the San Giorgio Martire Parish, which involves the entire village every year in preparing the scenes, costumes, and sets, renewing "the greatest love story ever told".
Now in its thirty-eighth edition, the Monforte San Giorgio Living Nativity is an unmissable appointment in the Sicilian Christmas calendar, capable of attracting visitors from all over the province of Messina and beyond. Admission is free: a choice that reaffirms the spirit of hospitality and community that drives the entire event.
The thirty-eighth edition of the Monforte San Giorgio Living Nativity was held between December 25, 2025, and January 6, 2026, with performances on selected days from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The La Vetere district welcomed, as every year, over a hundred costumed actors.
Along the guided path, scenes of the Roman census, markets, and ancient craft workshops - the blacksmith, the carpenter, the bakers - followed one another, leading up to the Nativity stable. The initiative, organized by the San Giorgio Martire Parish with the involvement of the entire Monforte San Giorgio community, confirmed its role as a central Christmas event in the province of Messina. Free admission.
