The preview of the traveling festival featuring live music and the flavors of Monferrato
In the heart of the Asti Monferrato region, the municipality of Villafranca d'Asti hosts the preview of Monferrato On Stage, the traveling festival that has been a staple of the Piedmontese summer for over a decade, weaving together live music, culture, sustainability, and the region's finest food and wine. Conceived and managed by the Fondazione MOS ETS under the artistic direction of Ettore Caretta, the festival spans numerous events across the provinces of Turin, Asti, and Alessandria, with the Villafranca preview serving as the season's grand opening.
For one night, the entire center of Villafranca d'Asti turns into an open-air stage. The evening unfolds across several spaces: the evocative Portici Comunali, where the musical program begins, and Piazza delle Pollaie, which hosts the main stage with headline concerts and DJ sets. The festival's signature formula remains: quality music, a convivial atmosphere, and deep roots in the local community, with the active involvement of volunteers from the town and neighboring villages.
The program alternates between live tributes to great Italian pop and rock music and more experimental, club-oriented performances. The main stage features original DJ sets designed to keep the crowd dancing until late, in a crescendo that starts with listening sessions under the porticoes and culminates in the central square. The line-up highlights artists and musicians from both the Piedmontese and national scenes, staying true to the festival's mission of bridging big names with local talent.
The beating heart of the preview is the food area, managed by volunteer groups from Villafranca and surrounding towns, serving traditional Monferrato peasant dishes, particularly specialties based on pork. The meals are paired with a selection of wines from the Consorzio Barbera d'Asti e Vini del Monferrato, a symbol of the winemaking identity of these UNESCO-listed hills. There is also a wide selection of cocktails and spirits from local producers.
Monferrato On Stage is more than just a concert series: it is a cultural project that connects the municipalities of Monferrato, supports local Pro Loco associations and agricultural producers, and guides the public to discover villages, squares, and courtyards often off the beaten path. The Villafranca d'Asti preview is the calling card for a season that brings live music to dozens of locations across Piedmont, always with the free admission format.
Villafranca d'Asti is located along the state road and the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway (Villanova d'Asti exit) and is served by the railway station on the Turin-Asti line. Ample parking is available near the town center.
Free admission to all shows. The food area opens in the early evening; concerts and DJ sets continue until late at night.
We recommend arriving early in the evening to enjoy the opening under the Portici Comunali and dining in the food area before the concerts on the main stage in Piazza delle Pollaie.
