The spring festival of the Schuhplattler dancers in Verschneid, above Mölten
The Möltner Schuaplattler Fete is one of the most anticipated events on the spring calendar of Mölten, a small mountain village in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. The event is hosted by the Möltner Schuaplattler, the local Schuhplattler dance group, and takes place at the "Schnappboden" festival grounds in the hamlet of Verschneid, nestled among the meadows and forests of the plateau above Bolzano.
Schuhplattler is the traditional dance of the Tyrolean Alps: dancers, dressed in traditional Tracht costumes, rhythmically strike their hands against their thighs and the soles of their shoes to the beat of folk music. In Mölten, this tradition is preserved and passed down by the local group, which opens its doors to the community and visitors alike with this Fete, turning a village evening into a collective celebration. It is a precious opportunity to experience the folklore and popular traditions of the German-speaking South Tyrol firsthand.
The evening's formula blends the charm of a village fair with the energy of live music. It kicks off in the late afternoon with the Feierabendbier (after-work beer), followed by a DJ and folk bands that keep the festival grounds lively until late at night. The dancers' performance is a highlight, leading up to the traditional midnight peak when the atmosphere reaches its zenith. With tents, food stalls, and outdoor benches, the Möltner Schuaplattler Fete is a classic South Tyrolean celebration where music, dance, and good company come together.
As this is an evening and night event featuring music and drinks, access is reserved for those aged 16 and over. Admission is free, and the setting at the foot of the mountains above Bolzano offers the typical charm of South Tyrolean festive nights, filled with fresh mountain air and warm local hospitality.
Mölten is a mountain municipality perched on a sunny plateau northwest of Bolzano, known for its vast meadows, hiking trails, and views of the Dolomites. The hamlet of Verschneid, home to the "Schnappboden" festival grounds, provides the ideal backdrop for a celebration that honors the identity and folk traditions of this corner of Trentino-South Tyrol.
