The auteur cinema festival of Milazzo, hosted at the Teatro Trifiletti
The Milazzo Film Festival is one of the longest-running cinematic events in the province of Messina. Founded in 2006 by the L'Altra Milazzo association, it brings life to the center of Milazzo—the 'City of the Cape' overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and gateway to the Aeolian Islands—every year between March and April. The heart of the festival is the historic Teatro Trifiletti, which serves as a gathering point for enthusiasts, students, actors, and directors for several days.
The artistic direction, led by Mario Sesti and Caterina Taricano, has given the festival a distinct identity over the years: it is not merely a list of screenings, but a space for dialogue where cinema is recounted by its protagonists. Recent editions have focused on the figure of the actor, viewed not just as a performer but as a true author capable of building characters and leaving a mark on the collective memory.
The program alternates between competitive screenings, tributes, masterclasses, and award ceremonies. Among the most popular sections are the short film competitions, which attract hundreds of entries from around the world each year, and the competition dedicated to documentaries. Numerous awards are presented, ranging from the Posidonia Prize for environmental sustainability to the INAIL Prize for young filmmakers under 35, as well as awards for the best international short film. Over the years, the stage at the Trifiletti has hosted many great names of Italian cinema.
Beyond the evening programming, the festival pays great attention to schools and universities, with meetings and activities aimed at younger generations, while promoting a strong bond with the local Milazzo and Sicilian territory. Admission to screenings and meetings is free until capacity is reached, a choice that makes the festival a popular and accessible event for the entire community.
Held in the spring, the Milazzo Film Festival is one of the premier cultural events in the Municipality of Milazzo and the Province of Messina, in Sicily. For visitors, it is also the perfect opportunity to explore the Capo di Milazzo, the old town, and the stunning coastal scenery that provides the backdrop for the event.
The twelfth edition of the Milazzo Film Festival took place from March 25 to 28, 2026, at the Teatro Trifiletti in Milazzo, under the artistic direction of Caterina Taricano and Mario Sesti. The central theme, 'Attorstudio', celebrated the centrality of the actor as an authorial figure through dialogue-based meetings, screenings, tributes, and activities aimed at schools and universities.
The protagonists of the four evenings included Ficarra and Picone, Monica Guerritore, Laura Morante, and Rocco Papaleo, as well as Gomorrah writers Maddalena Ravagli and Leonardo Fasoli, and director Marco Risi. Numerous awards were presented, including the Silver Scarab (Scarabeo d'Argento). As per tradition, all events were free of charge until capacity was reached.
Milazzo is located along the Tyrrhenian coast of the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Milazzo exit. By train, the Milazzo station is on the Messina-Palermo line and is connected to the city center by local buses. The nearest airports are in Catania and Reggio Calabria.
The main evening events take place at the Teatro Trifiletti, in the center of Milazzo.
Access to screenings and meetings is free until all available seats are filled.
We recommend arriving early for the most popular events and checking the official website for the updated program and schedule.
