Messina's showcase for auteur cinema and Italian film clubs
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Film Circle Festival is a cinematic event held in Messina, in the metropolitan province of the Strait city, in Sicily. Promoted by the Cineforum Orione with the support of the Sicilia Film Commission and in collaboration with the Italian Federation of Film Circles (FICC) and its regional branch, FICC Sicilia, the festival is traditionally hosted at the Cinema Lux, a historic venue on Largo Seggiola that remains one of the longest-running cultural landmarks in the Peloritan capital.
The Messina festival stands out on the national stage: it brings together the experiences of Italian film circles and cineclubs, hosting FICC and FICC Sicilia assemblies, a trade exhibition, and forums on the role of film associations. The heart of the event is the national competition dedicated to documentaries about cinema, which awards the best Italian work on the art of the seventh muse each year: in the 2024 edition, the prize was awarded to Antonietta De Lillo for "L'occhio della gallina".
The festival also presents the Cineforum Orione Lifetime Achievement Award. Past editions have featured prominent Italian directors and authors, who are welcomed for public discussions and dedicated screenings. The artistic direction is led by Marco Olivieri, who moderates the Q&A sessions with guest authors.
The program alternates between documentaries, debut features, films from international festivals, and contemporary auteur titles, with a special focus on Sicilian memory and identity. Screenings are accompanied by debates, presentations, and moments dedicated to younger audiences, fostering a constant dialogue between the big screen and the local community.
For the city of Messina and the entire Strait area, the Film Circle Festival is a highly anticipated autumn cultural event, capable of highlighting the work of cineclubs and bringing directors, documentarians, and films that are otherwise difficult to see in commercial circuits to the big screen. Its location at the Cinema Lux also makes it an opportunity to rediscover a historic theater and its bond with the local audience.
The 2026 edition of the Film Circle Festival in Messina does not yet have official dates. The festival, hosted at the Cinema Lux and promoted by the Cineforum Orione with the FICC and FICC Sicilia, traditionally takes place in autumn, between October and November. We are awaiting confirmation of the calendar and program from the organizer. For updates, please refer to the Cineforum Orione website.
