The music, theatre, and art festival in one of the most beautiful villages of the Primiero valley
Mezzano Romantica is the cultural festival that every summer transforms Mezzano, a small jewel of the Primiero valley in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), into an open-air stage. Recognized as one of the «Most Beautiful Villages in Italy», Mezzano has always been tied to wood and the elements of alpine nature: it is from this identity that a festival was born, blending music, theatre, and visual arts in an intimate dialogue with the village's rural architecture.
The event is organized by the Mezzano Romantica Association under the artistic direction of Francesco Schweizer, who has curated a refined program of concerts and theatrical shows for years, attracting artists of national and international acclaim. Each evening is designed as a close encounter between the audience and the performers, held in churches, traditional barns (tabià), and the most evocative corners of the village.
The most recognizable signature of Mezzano Romantica is the «Cataste e Canzei» installation project. Along the narrow alleys, at the foot of ancient facades, under balconies, and in courtyards, the traditional winter woodpile becomes a work of art: stacks of firewood take on unexpected shapes, telling stories of the past, reinterpreting historical events, and reflecting the dreams of the homeowners. Every year, the initiative invites established artists to create new large-scale permanent installations, which can be visited freely throughout the year.
Beyond the woodpiles, the village offers themed trails dedicated to water, vegetable gardens, rural architecture, murals, and ancient inscriptions on the houses. The «Red Chair» project invites visitors to pause and observe the village's vistas and details with fresh eyes, in a slow and contemplative journey perfectly in line with the «romantic» spirit that gives the festival its name.
Strengthening the musical offering, Mezzano Romantica hosts the Trentino Music Festival every summer. This is one of Europe's most important programs dedicated to international musical training and production, bringing dozens of young artists, operas, musicals, and symphonic concerts to the Primiero area, spread across Mezzano, Fiera di Primiero, Imèr, and Canal San Bovo. The combination of the village's signature festival and the international music academy makes Mezzano a cultural landmark for the entire valley.
All Mezzano Romantica performances are free of charge: a choice that makes the festival accessible to both residents and tourists, highlighting the hospitable nature of the Primiero valley. Amidst the Dolomite mountains, classical music, theatre, and contemporary art reach a wide audience in a unique landscape setting in Trentino-Alto Adige.
The 2026 edition marks the sixteenth season of Mezzano Romantica, once again under the artistic direction of Francesco Schweizer. The festival confirms its winning formula: auteur performances in the most evocative spots of the village of Mezzano (province of Trento), the 'Cataste e Canzei' art installations, and themed trails through the alleys.
The heart of the musical program is the Trentino Music Festival, scheduled from June 20 to August 20, 2026, across Mezzano, Fiera di Primiero, Imèr, and Canal San Bovo, led by executive director Mitchell Piper, artistic director Robin Blauers Piper, and musical director Maestro J. David Jackson.
The 2026 program alternates auteur performances curated by Francesco Schweizer in the village of Mezzano with the Trentino Music Festival schedule (June 20 – August 20), featuring over thirty events spread across Mezzano, Fiera di Primiero, Imèr, and Canal San Bovo. All events are free to attend.
