The theatre season at the Teatro Comunale Giovanni Papini in Pieve Santo Stefano
Metamorfosi is the theatre season that brings the Teatro Comunale Giovanni Papini in Pieve Santo Stefano to life. Located in a village in the Valtiberina area of the Tuscany region, in the province of Arezzo, the festival is promoted by the Laboratori Permanenti company with the support of the Pieve Santo Stefano municipality. Over the years, it has become a highly anticipated event, capable of turning an intimate theatre space into a true cultural crossroads for the entire Upper Tiber Valley.
The Metamorfosi programme alternates between plays, reinterpretations of classics, and popular theatre, with a special focus on community engagement. Alongside evening performances, the season offers morning shows for schools, theatrical readings, and workshops led by the company's actors, making the Papini not just a place to watch shows, but also a space to learn and take part in the scene.
The selection ranges from ancient Greek comedy, performed with traditional masks and language, to contemporary Tuscan authorial comedy, as well as journeys through the Commedia dell'Arte and the history of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, told on stage with the contribution of the Coro Altotiberino.
The driving force behind the festival is the Laboratori Permanenti company, an artistic collective rooted in Pieve Santo Stefano that manages the direction and production of numerous shows in the season. Their work combines theatrical research, training, and local engagement, giving Metamorfosi a distinct identity: high-quality theatre that remains accessible and close to its audience.
Known as the City of Diaries thanks to the famous National Diary Archive, Pieve Santo Stefano is a small town in the Tuscan Valtiberina overlooking the upper course of the Tiber River. Attending a Metamorfosi show is also an opportunity to discover this authentic corner of Tuscany, far from the major tourist circuits, where culture maintains a close and daily bond with the life of the community.
The 5th edition of Metamorfosi opened on January 31, 2026, with Pillole di me, the show by and starring Alessandro Benvenuti, which was met with great public success. On February 8 and 9, The Arbitration (Epitrepontes) by Menander was performed, an ancient Greek comedy produced by Seven Cults, also in a version dedicated to schools. The season concluded on March 28 and 29, 2026, with the Commedia dell'Arte workshop Il corpo, la voce, il racconto, led by Caterina Casini and aimed at citizens and the local area. There were eight theatrical events in total, as part of a broader programme created with the Coro Altotiberino and the municipality of Pieve Santo Stefano.
