The historical re-enactment of the arrival of Ruggero da Fiore in Tripi
Medievando is the annual historical re-enactment that brings Tripi to life, a small town in the province of Messina perched in the Nebrodi mountains, home to the remains of the ancient city of Abakainon. The event revives a significant chapter of Sicilian medieval history: the solemn entry of Ruggero da Fiore into Tripi and his oath as lord of the village, set against the backdrop of the War of the Sicilian Vespers.
The heart of the event is the historical pageant, featuring dozens of performers in period costumes, including knights, nobles, ladies, men-at-arms, and commoners. The procession begins at the Church of San Biagio in Casale, a rural hamlet, from where Ruggero da Fiore rides on horseback accompanied by his noble entourage toward the town center. The procession reaches the Mother Church of Tripi, where the evocative oath ceremony—the highlight of the re-enactment—takes place.
Launched in 2019, the event stems from the Municipality of Tripi's commitment to celebrating its history and the medieval roots of this Nebrodi village. The re-enactments draw on episodes from the War of the Sicilian Vespers and the epic tales of the commanders who shaped Sicily between the 13th and 14th centuries, blending historical memory with popular tradition.
Beyond the pageant, the day is enriched with performances, entertainment, and scenes of medieval life that continue until evening, turning the streets and squares of Tripi into an open-air stage. With music, flag-wavers, encampments, and re-enactment scenes, residents and visitors alike are immersed in the Middle Ages of Sicily.
Visiting Medievando is also the perfect opportunity to discover Tripi and its extraordinary archaeological heritage linked to Abakainon, an ancient Siculan and Greek city. Its necropolis and archaeological site make the village a must-visit cultural destination in the Nebrodi mountains of Sicily.
For 2026, the Medievando re-enactment is announced in Tripi for June 24. As per tradition, the event includes a historical pageant with costumed performers, the arrival of Ruggero da Fiore on horseback, and the oath ceremony at the Mother Church, followed by medieval performances and entertainment. The detailed program, including times and the pageant route, will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Tripi is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (take the Falcone or Patti exit) and continuing inland along the provincial roads. The nearest train station is Falcone-Tripi on the Tyrrhenian line, from which you can continue to the hilltop town.
The village is characterized by narrow streets and stairways; comfortable footwear is recommended. Dates and specific times may vary from year to year: it is advisable to check the updated program on the official website of the Municipality of Tripi before traveling.
