The patronal festival of Fondachelli-Fantina, blending faith, tradition, and music in the Peloritani mountains
The Guardian Angels Patronal Festival is the main religious and civic event in Fondachelli-Fantina, a small mountain town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, nestled in the Peloritani mountains. Every year, on the second Sunday of July, the village dresses up to honor its patrons, the Guardian Angels, in a celebration that deeply intertwines the spiritual dimension with community life.
The festival is rooted in the popular devotion of the community, which has gathered around the figure of the Guardian Angels for generations. Religious celebrations include the preparatory novena, with the rosary and Eucharistic celebrations, culminating in solemn masses officiated by the parish priest and the Bishop. The most awaited moment is the procession with the statue of the Guardian Angel, which winds through the village streets accompanied by the faithful, while illuminations light up the village's most important landmarks.
Alongside the religious aspect, the Fondachelli-Fantina patronal festival has always offered evening entertainment in Piazza Angeli Custodi, the beating heart of the village. Live music, brass bands, and performances make the festival a moment of gathering for the entire community and for the many emigrants who return to their hometown specifically for this occasion. The traditional morning fair and popular festivities complete a program that spans several days.
For the locals, the Guardian Angels Patronal Festival represents much more than a simple anniversary: it is the time of year when the community reunites, families come together, and the village's identity is renewed. It should be noted that the official liturgical feast of the Guardian Angels falls on October 2nd, but it is the summer celebration in July that brings the entire community together in the festive atmosphere of the Sicilian summer.
Immersed in the greenery of the Peloritani, Fondachelli-Fantina is known for the sanctuary of Maria SS. della Provvidenza and for its typical meat and cheese products. The patronal festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of the Messina province, far from mass tourism circuits, where popular traditions are still alive and deeply felt.
The 2026 Guardian Angels Patronal Festival in Fondachelli-Fantina (Messina) will be held over the weekend of July 11th and 12th. The religious program culminates on Sunday, July 12th, the second Sunday of the month, with solemn masses and the traditional procession through the village streets.
The most anticipated novelty of the 2026 edition is the concert by Federica Carta, scheduled for Saturday, July 11th at 10:00 PM in Piazza Angeli Custodi. The young Roman pop singer, launched by the television talent show Amici, will bring her most famous hits to the stage in a free live performance open to the entire community.
As per tradition, the festival is accompanied by illuminations lighting up the village and popular festivities in the square.
