Marsala commemorates the Landing of the Thousand with history, fairs, and culture
The Garibaldi Celebrations are the quintessential identity-defining event for the town of Marsala, in the province of Trapani, in the heart of western Sicily. Every year, around May 11, the city commemorates the historic Landing of the Thousand: it was May 11, 1860, when Giuseppe Garibaldi and his volunteers landed in the port of Marsala, launching the expedition that would change the course of the Italian Risorgimento. Since then, Marsala has proudly held the title of "City of the Thousand," a legacy renewed each spring by these celebrations.
The institutional heart of the events is concentrated around the anniversary date. May 11 begins with a tribute to the civilian victims of 1943 at Villa del Rosario, followed by a tribute to Giuseppe Garibaldi in Piazza della Vittoria, and culminates in the official ceremony in Piazza Unità d'Italia, in front of the Monument to the Thousand, featuring the raising of the flag and the national anthem. The program includes historical re-enactments, conferences and forums on Risorgimento themes, guided tours of Garibaldi-related sites, and tastings of local products.
Alongside the historical commemorations is the traditional May Fair, one of the most cherished events for locals: for about three weeks, stalls, markets, and a large funfair enliven the city, with extended hours late into the night on holidays and weekends. During the fair, even the weekly Tuesday market is temporarily relocated, highlighting the event's significance to the community's daily life.
In recent years, the program has been enriched with cultural initiatives such as "The Landing of the Books – Street Book Festival" and "The May of Books," featuring author presentations, children's workshops, theatrical performances, and live music spread across Piazza Mameli, Piazza Unità d'Italia, and the Lungomare Florio. There are also sailing regattas, urban space inaugurations, and entertainment moments that engage families and visitors alike.
The Garibaldi Celebrations are much more than a simple re-enactment: they represent the deep bond between Marsala, its history, and Sicily as a whole. Amidst the scent of the famous Marsala wine, the charm of the port, and the memory of the Risorgimento, the event offers residents and tourists a unique opportunity to discover one of the most important chapters of Italian history in a setting of authentic celebration.
The 2026 edition marked the 166th anniversary of the Landing of the Thousand in Marsala. The May Fair began on April 24, with the funfair located in the equipped area behind the fruit and vegetable market, and markets distributed over approximately three weeks.
Institutional ceremonies took place on May 8 in the Amabilina district, with the naming of Piazza Paolo VI and the inauguration of a social housing center dedicated to Chiara Lubich. May 11, the highlight day, opened with a tribute to the civilian victims of 1943 at Villa del Rosario, a tribute to Garibaldi in Piazza della Vittoria, and the official celebration in Piazza Unità d'Italia, featuring the flag-raising, national anthem, and the opening of the new Tourist Hub at the Monument to the Thousand. In the evening, the English Quarter on the Lungomare Florio was inaugurated.
The cultural program included "The Landing of the Books – Street Book Festival" (May 9-10) across Piazza Mameli, Piazza Unità d'Italia, and the seafront, as well as "The May of Books."
Marsala is accessible by car via the A29 motorway (Palermo-Mazara del Vallo). By train, the Marsala station is connected to Trapani and Palermo. The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi, located just a few kilometers from the center.
Institutional ceremonies are concentrated in Piazza Unità d'Italia, Piazza della Vittoria, and along the Lungomare Florio. The May Fair and the funfair take place in designated areas of the city center.
Access to the events and the fair is free; some funfair attractions require a fee.
