The Red Cross village festival in the heart of Lunigiana, featuring ravioli, the greasy pole, and music by the local Philharmonic
In Albiano Magra, an ancient hamlet in the municipality of Aulla in the province of Massa Carrara, May 1st is more than just a day off: it is a true village festival that draws residents, families, and curious visitors to the Italian Red Cross garden every year. Here, in the heart of the Tuscan Lunigiana, Labor Day intertwines with the celebration of volunteer work, creating an open-air day filled with conviviality, authentic flavors, and timeless games.
The beating heart of the day is the traditional open-air lunch, served in the garden on Via Don Pietro Corsini. The menu features the most beloved dishes of Lunigiana cuisine: authentic ravioli, fragrant porchetta, seasonal fava beans, local cheese, and the essential sgabeiโthe famous fried bread dough that accompanies every celebration in these parts. Reservations are recommended to ensure the best service.
The most anticipated moment remains the Albero della Cuccagna (greasy pole) challenge: local teams climb the pole to reach the top in a cheerful competition that gets crowds of all ages cheering. Nearby, the lawn comes alive with classic games for both children and adults, reviving the carefree atmosphere of traditional May Day outings.
The soundtrack for the day is provided by the live performances of the Filarmonica Albianese, the local band that accompanies the festivities and helps create the sense of community that defines the event. Between courses, the music brings different generations together at one large, open-air table.
The festival is organized by the Italian Red Cross - Albiano Magra Committee, which is deeply rooted in the Aulla area and throughout the Lunigiana region. More than just a culinary event, the May Day Festival is a gathering that highlights volunteer work and strengthens local community bonds in a corner of Tuscany that, while often off the beaten path, is incredibly rich in authenticity.
