The parade of tractors and agricultural floats decorated with "lu maju" through the streets of Castelvetrano
The May 1st Festival – Agricultural Float Parade is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Castelvetrano, a town in the province of Trapani overlooking the agricultural and archaeological lands of Western Sicily, just a few kilometers from the famous Selinunte Archaeological Park. Every year, on Labor Day, the Municipality of Castelvetrano pays tribute to the world of work and rural culture with a grand parade of agricultural vehicles that travels through the historic center.
The stars of the day are the tractors, trucks, and agricultural floats, festively decorated with yellow daisies which, in the Sicilian dialect, are called "lu maju": a symbol of rebirth, prosperity, and community belonging, linked to the arrival of spring and the harvest cycle. The procession is a colorful and noisy tribute to field work, and to the toil and passion of the local farmers.
The vehicles gather early in the morning on Viale Roma; from there, the parade begins, traveling along Corso Vittorio Emanuele to reach the Sistema delle Piazze, the urban living room of Castelvetrano. In the heart of the city, the official ceremony takes place with greetings from institutions and union representatives, followed by the awards ceremony for the most beautiful floats, voted on for their most creative and well-crafted decorations.
The event is deeply rooted in the town's collective memory: the parade of agricultural vehicles returned after more than thirty years, reviving a ritual that once united the working world, families, and the entire community. The event is organized by CGIL Trapani together with the Pro Loco of Castelvetrano Triscina and Selinunte and local associations, with the support of the municipal administration.
Participating in the May 1st Festival is also a great opportunity to visit Castelvetrano and its surroundings: the historic center with the Sistema delle Piazze, the nearby seaside hamlet of Marinella di Selinunte, and the great Selinunte Archaeological Park, one of the most important in the Mediterranean. In the afternoon, the festivities often continue with live music and entertainment on the coast of Marinella.
The 2026 edition of the May 1st Festival – Agricultural Float Parade in Castelvetrano, titled "May 1st Festival 2026 – Memory, Tradition, and Community", took place on Friday, May 1st, 2026. The vehicles gathered in the morning on Viale Roma; from there, the parade of tractors, trucks, and agricultural floats decorated with "lu maju" traveled along Corso Vittorio Emanuele to the Sistema delle Piazze.
In the heart of the city, institutional greetings were delivered by Mayor Giovanni Lentini and the provincial secretary of CGIL Trapani, followed by the awards ceremony for the top three finishers in the "Best Float of May 1st, 2026" category. The event was organized by CGIL Trapani together with the Pro Loco of Castelvetrano Triscina and Selinunte and local associations.
Castelvetrano can be reached by car via the A29 Palermo–Mazara del Vallo motorway (Castelvetrano exit). The Castelvetrano train station is served by regional Sicilian lines. The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi, followed by Palermo Falcone-Borsellino.
The vehicles gather in the morning on Viale Roma, with the parade departing in the late morning towards the Sistema delle Piazze. The event is free and open to everyone. During the event, traffic changes and parking bans are expected on the streets along the route (Viale Roma, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and central squares).
We recommend parking in areas outside the center and walking to the parade route. Combine your visit with a trip to the Selinunte Archaeological Park and the coast of Marinella.
