The patronal feast of Fossacesia, the heart of the Abruzzo summer
On August 7th, the town of Fossacesia, overlooking the stunning Costa dei Trabocchi in the province of Chieti, pauses to honor San Donato d'Arezzo, a bishop and martyr who lived in the 4th century and serves as the town's primary patron saint. On this day, municipal offices remain closed, and the entire town center transforms into a large pedestrian area, bustling with thousands of worshippers, residents, and visitors.
San Donato was the second bishop of Arezzo and died on August 7, 362. His figure, associated with the famous miracle of the chalice restored by divine intercession, is venerated in numerous Italian towns. Throughout Southern Italy, San Donato is invoked as a protector against epilepsy and mental ailments, and in Fossacesia, his devotion has deep roots, passed down through generations.
The most solemn moment is the procession that, in the late afternoon of August 7th, winds through the main streets of the historic center, accompanied by the town band and civil and religious authorities. Eucharistic celebrations and sacred rites intertwine with the festive and civic spirit of the day.
In the evening, Piazza Fantini becomes the stage for the festivities with concerts, pop orchestras, and live shows, while the squares and streets of the center host entertainment for all ages. The evening traditionally concludes with spectacular fireworks that light up the sky over the Adriatic coast. On the eve of the feast, the Notte Bianca (White Night) brings Fossacesia to life until late with music, food, and performances.
The San Donato Patronal Feast is a highlight of Bellestate, the summer program of the Municipality of Fossacesia, which offers over sixty initiatives from June to October, including concerts, theater, traditions, and food and wine events, spread across the seafront, the hills, the villages, and cultural sites like the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere. A showcase that celebrates the identity and popular traditions of this corner of Abruzzo.
Fossacesia celebrates its patron saint, San Donato, on Friday, August 7, 2026, a day when municipal offices will be closed. The feast is part of the Bellestate 2026 summer program, which accompanies the town from June to October with over sixty events.
The program will follow the traditional structure of the feast: the Notte Bianca on the eve, the solemn procession on August 7th through the town streets, concerts and live shows in Piazza Fantini and the historic center, and the grand fireworks display to close the evening. The detailed schedule of performances and the names of guest artists will be released by the Municipality of Fossacesia and the Patronal Feast Committee on official channels in the weeks prior.
