Saint Giusto Martyr, the patron saint of Paglieta

In the heart of the Sangro-Aventino area, nestled among the hills of the Chieti province, the town of Paglieta dedicates its most heartfelt day each July 14th to Saint Giusto Martyr, the community's patron and protector. The saint's relics, a gift from Pope Innocent XII, were moved from the Roman catacombs between 1692 and 1700 and have since been at the center of local devotion. July 14th, the day of his martyrdom, is the date around which the civil and religious celebrations that animate this Abruzzese village revolve.

The banner of the Great War veterans

The most moving moment is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of Paglieta. Leading the parade is a historic banner of great value: during World War I, Saint Giusto was invoked as the protector of the village's soldiers, and at the end of the conflict, the survivors donated a national flag to the saint, featuring a painted image of the martyr at its center, embellished with gold embroidery and friezes. To this day, that cloth precedes the procession every year, preserving the memory of the soldiers from Paglieta.

International folklore in Piazza Roma

Alongside its religious dimension, the patronal feast has become a cultural event of international scope. In Piazza Roma, the heart of the festivities, the choral and folk festival organized by the San Giusto Martyr Choir of Paglieta takes place, under the patronage of Federcori, Chorus Inside, the Abruzzo Choir Association, and the Municipality. Choirs, ensembles, and dance groups take turns on stage, bringing the popular cultures of various Italian regions and distant countries to the village through songs, dances, and traditional costumes. The evenings are rounded off with comedy shows and brass band concerts that fill the square until late at night.

A village to discover

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Paglieta, an ancient Castrum Palletae of Italic origin, with its round keep, the Gate Tower, and the 13th-century walls. Immersed in the Sangro landscape, the village offers visitors the authentic atmosphere of an Abruzzese town festival, where devotion to the patron saint and the warm welcome extended to guest groups blend into one great community celebration.
