The maritime devotion of Fossacesia, renewed every July 16th along the seafront
The Madonna del Carmine Sea Procession is one of the most heartfelt events of the summer in Fossacesia, a town in the province of Chieti overlooking the stunning Costa dei Trabocchi in Abruzzo. Every year, around July 16th, the day the Church celebrates the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, the community of Fossacesia Marina gathers around its patron to renew a tradition rooted in the village's maritime culture.
The central moment is the procession on the water: the statue of the Madonna del Carmine is carried on the shoulders of the faithful to the Marina del Sole tourist port, where it is embarked on a festively decorated fishing boat. From there, it sets sail, followed by a procession of vessels, traveling about two nautical miles along the coast to the waters facing the Stella Maris church on the northern seafront. It is an ancient rite rich in values such as forgiveness, brotherhood, and friendship, which for generations has united religious devotion with the fishermen's gratitude toward the sea.
The celebration does not end with the procession: the Fossacesia seafront comes alive with musical evenings and live concerts, culminating in the traditional fireworks display over the sea, which illuminates the water in front of the coast. The event is part of the extensive Bellestate summer program promoted by the Municipality of Fossacesia, which animates the territory between June and October with over sixty initiatives spanning the sea, hills, and cultural sites like the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere.
Fossacesia, awarded for years with the Blue Flag for the quality of its waters and services, links this festival not only to faith but also to pride in a well-cared-for sea. The Madonna del Carmine Sea Procession is thus both a moment of spiritual reflection and a great popular celebration, capable of attracting residents and visitors to the Trabocchi coast in the heart of the Abruzzo summer.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna del Carmine Sea Procession takes place on July 16th in Fossacesia Marina, on the Costa dei Trabocchi. The event is part of the Bellestate 2026 program of the Municipality of Fossacesia, which offers over sixty appointments between June and October across the sea, hills, and cultural sites.
The day revolves around the votive sea procession, with the statue of the Madonna embarked at the Marina del Sole port and accompanied toward the Stella Maris church, and is completed by musical evenings on the seafront and the customary fireworks display over the waters facing the coast. The detailed program of concerts and times will be made public by the municipal administration closer to the festival.
Fossacesia Marina is located on the Costa dei Trabocchi, in the province of Chieti. By car: A14 motorway, Val di Sangro exit, then SS16 Adriatica. By train: the Fossacesia-Torino di Sangro station is close to the seafront. The most convenient airport is Pescara-Abruzzo.
