The historic Carnival in the heart of the Canavese region, featuring allegorical floats, masquerades, and village festivities.
The Mathi Carnival, affectionately called Carlevà 'd Mathi in the local Piedmontese dialect, is one of the most anticipated events on the winter calendar for this town in the Province of Turin, nestled along the Stura di Lanzo river in the heart of the Canavese. It is a village festival in the most genuine sense: born from the community and for the community, brought to life by the volunteers of the Pro Loco Mathi Tourist Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Mathi and numerous local associations.
The highlight of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, which winds through the village streets starting from Via Martiri della Libertà and concludes in Piazza Don Novero. The floats, built with passion over the preceding months by local groups, parade accompanied by marching bands and masked participants from all over Piedmont, in a festive procession that colors the streets of Mathi and engages both adults and children.
The parade is surrounded by numerous evenings and events that enliven the Piazza Don Novero Festival Pavilion: grand masquerade parties with live music and mobile discos, lunches and dinners at the Pro Loco food stand, and themed evenings featuring grilled specialties and tribute bands. Between parades, there is no shortage of street food and craft beer, making the Mathi Carnival a true occasion for conviviality and community gathering.
The Mathi Carnival has deep roots in local tradition, having been interrupted in some years only to be brought back to life through the commitment of local volunteers. Today, it represents one of the defining events for Mathi and the Canavese region: an opportunity to rediscover the pleasure of community celebration, promote the local area, and pass on the taste of the traditional Piedmontese Carnival—full of floats, masks, and popular joy—to new generations.
The event is concentrated between the end of January and the beginning of February, with the grand Sunday parade as the main attraction, accompanied by a series of evening events and side activities in the surrounding days. Admission to the festivities is generally affordable and accessible, designed to welcome families and visitors of all ages.
The 2026 edition of the Mathi Carnival was spread across several events at the end of January. It opened on Friday, January 23 with a grand masquerade party at the Piazza Don Novero Pavilion, starting at 10:00 PM, animated by the mobile disco of Radio Gran Paradiso.
The central moment took place on Sunday, January 25: from 12:00 PM, lunch at the Pro Loco food stand, and at 2:30 PM, the departure of the parade of allegorical floats and groups from Via Martiri della Libertà, with a grand finale in Piazza Don Novero around 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM with music and an aperitif. The festivities concluded on Saturday, January 31 with an evening featuring grilled food and live music.
Mathi is located in the Canavese region, in the Province of Turin. By car, it can be reached via the SP1 road of the Valli di Lanzo; it is approximately 30 km northwest of Turin. By train, the Mathi station is served by the Turin-Ceres (SFM) line. The parade and events take place in the town center, between Via Martiri della Libertà and Piazza Don Novero.
Organized by the Pro Loco Mathi Tourist Association (tel. +39 347 5828973, e-mail [email protected]). During the parade, traffic restrictions and dedicated parking areas will be in effect: please consult the ordinances published on the Municipality of Mathi website.
An event suitable for families. We recommend wearing warm clothing for the outdoor parade and arriving early to find parking on the main event days.
