Mastodon Relays - Roatto Stage

A mountain bike challenge in the heart of Valtriversa

The Mastodon Relays also stop in Roatto, a small municipality of just over three hundred inhabitants nestled in the hills of Valtriversa, in the province of Asti, in the heart of the Asti Monferrato. For one evening in June, the town center transforms into a mountain bike circuit of about 2.5 kilometers, a mixed route of asphalt and dirt that winds through the village streets and its hilly vistas.

The name of the initiative refers to the discovery of fossil remains of a mastodon in the Valtriversa area, a prehistoric animal similar to an elephant: a paleontological heritage that gives identity and a name to this corner of Piedmont and links sport to the excellence of the territory.

Roatto joins the circuit

2026 marks Roatto's entry into the event. After the success of the first edition, which included four towns, the circuit has grown to unite six municipalities in the area: San Damiano d'Asti, Villafranca d'Asti, Monale, Roatto, Ferrere, and Cantarana. Every Thursday evening, from May 21 to June 25, a different town hosts its stage, with the general classification building up week by week until the final.

The event was born from the collaboration between the amateur sports association Jolly Europrestige ASD, based in San Damiano d'Asti, and the Valle del Mastodonte Commercial District, with the goal of combining sports promotion with the enhancement of the territory, its businesses, and its products.

Categories and race format

The format is that of an urban gymkhana lasting about an hour, accessible to a wide audience. The admitted categories include pairs (divided into Under 40, Under 90, and Over 90), individuals, e-bikes, and gravel bikes, allowing both competitive athletes and simple cycling enthusiasts to participate. At each stage, the top three finishers in each category are awarded, while the general circuit classification determines the absolute winner at the end of the six races.

Each stage, beyond the competition, is above all a moment of celebration for the community: at the end of the race, athletes and spectators gather for a convivial refreshment organized by volunteers, where they can savor the typical products of Valtriversa. The Roatto stage thus confirms the vocation of this small Monferrato town to team up with neighboring villages around sport and the promotion of the territory.
