The Monale stage of the Valtriversa evening MTB circuit
The Mastodon Relay is the Monale stage of an evening cycling circuit that brings the municipalities of the so-called Mastodon Valley to life, located in the heart of Valtriversa, in the province of Asti. In Monale, the competition brings a mountain bike race to the town centre, held on a city loop of approximately 2.5 kilometresโa mixed asphalt and dirt course that winds around the town hall square and the village streets.
The name of the initiative refers to the discovery of fossil remains of a mastodon, a prehistoric animal similar to an elephant, in the Valtriversa territory: a paleontological heritage that gives identity and a name to this corner of the Asti Monferrato.
The Monale race is not an isolated event, but one of the legs of a circuit that in 2026 unites six municipalities in the area: San Damiano d'Asti, Villafranca d'Asti, Monale, Roatto, Ferrere, and Cantarana. Every Thursday evening, from May to June, a different town hosts its stage, with the general classification building up week by week until the final.
The event was born from the collaboration between the sports association Jolly Europrestige ASD and the Valle del Mastodonte Commercial District, with the aim of combining sports promotion with the enhancement of the territory, its businesses, and its products.
The format is that of an urban gymkhana lasting about an hour, accessible to a wide audience. Admitted categories include couples (divided into Under 40, Under 90, and Over 90), individuals, e-bikes, and gravel bikes, allowing both competitive athletes and casual cycling enthusiasts to participate together.
Each stage, beyond the competition, is above all a moment of celebration for the community: at the end of the race, athletes and spectators gather for a convivial refreshment organized by volunteers, where they can savour the typical products of Valtriversa. The Monale stage thus confirms the vocation of this small municipality in the Asti Monferrato to team up with neighbouring towns around sport and the promotion of the territory.
The second edition of the Mastodon Relays brought the third of the six stages of the 2026 circuit to Monale, which grew this year with the addition of two new municipalities. The Monale race was held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, on a city loop of approximately 2.5 kilometres, mixed asphalt and dirt, around the Piazza del Municipio.
As with all stages, the event combined a sporting challenge with a village festival, featuring a final refreshment organized by volunteers and dedicated to typical local products.
Categories: couples (Under 40, Under 90, Over 90), individuals, e-bikes, and gravel bikes.
